Here is a rather disturbing article that says the TSA can not only search your laptop but they can also copy any files they want and give them to third-party agencies. Say what?!?

Domestic travelers have become familiar with intrusions and searches at Transportation Security Administration security checkpoints. But as the ACLU has recently discovered, international travelers are not only having their laptops seized and searched by Customs and Border Protection, but agents are making copies of files and giving them to third-party agencies. The ACLU filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the government, which turned over hundreds of pages of documents revealing startling information about how much access—and how little oversight—agents have to your gaming laptops when you travel.

This is not going to go over well. I'm guessing this is another unknow provision of the patriot act (A.k.a you are not free act)
 
um, not if i encrypt them... well they can but they will have to pay for my hotel room if i miss my flight.
 
not good. not good at all. this is why I'm getting to the point of not bringing a laptop when i travel. I don't need some idiot digging thru my files/pictures etc.

Wonderful for privacy....
 
I wonder how they are copying the files?

- Boot disk? Disable boot from CD - password protect bios
- Windows? Password protect so they can't log in?
- USB Drive? Disable USB Devices in bios when traveling.
- Removing Hard Drive? - Superglue razor blades to it + Encrypt + superglue screws?


Better yet, have a portable usb drive that you boot off of or store your data on, and encrypt that. put that w/ someone elses luggage..

Or even better - 2 usb raid striped encrypted....
 
How about hardware encryption with power on authentication. They can not force you to unencrypt the drives as you can cite the 5th or deny on lack of reason

i know this comes up a lot.

I *think* cia/fbi can force you to unencrypt. TSA is a sham and i doubt they have any kind of real authority other than making you late for a flight if you refuse.

I believe this applies ONLY to people coming into the USA and not people going out as they (incoming) do not have the full rights until they pass through security and into the USA. Search and seizure laws don't apply outside the borders.
BUT if you are smart (or dumb) enough to transport important data across borders, why would you carry it on yourself. Email or online storage, duh.
And I if you refuse to give them access to your stuff, I bet you a pretty penny that they WILL take you away and "interrogate" you for quite some time to make you think otherwise.
 
Wow, this article and title is full of fail. It's the CBP not the TSA and only for international since searches at borders have much less protections.

Never bring a laptop with you for international travel because if it doesn't get searched here, it can always get searched where you're gonig.
 
I like the idea of the power on authentication w/ a 3x auto delete.

We should all keep an encrypted file on our systems even if we have no need. Make it some horrendously huge image or something that takes up a lot of space, but have it be something innoculous such as a "hello world" message, or "Kilroy was here."

First of all TSA operates under different rules then law enforcement. They follow Administrative policy which is designed, " for the safety of the flying public". Which means they have wide scope authority. AND flying is not a right it's a privilege, sorta like having a drivers license is a privilege. You have no constitutional right to drive on public roadways, hence why your DL can be revoked permanently for being a dumbass.

So if you don't agree to the policy set forth by the TSA (as dictated by the patriot act and intelligence bill(s) blah blah blah) you can turn your ass around and drive to your destination instead. You can thank the terrorist for this.

As far as CIA/FBI forcing you to un-encrypt, No not true. Doesn't matter. Do you not think they have people who can crack encryption? Paleeasse. They'll have your HD imaged before you can say, " WTF?"

And another thing, do people really thank TSA and CBP would waste their time if they didn't think the data storage device didn't need a second inspection? Come on man these people are the good guys trying to save your asses from become a burning flame going into a smoking hole. If you're that worried about your kiddie pron than drive or stay home.

I happen to travel a lot (within the USA) i was asked to unlock/unencrypt my laptop at the check point. I said not a chance, guy chukkeld and sent me on my way. This was only flying from MN to NYC. So i wouldn't put too much into this.

no offense taken. I actually wanted someone to clear that up for me. I know if i travel to canada for any extended periods i encrypt my hd and mail it back before i travel home. all i carry with me over the border is a laptop with a fresh copy of windows/office and other necessities i may need on the road.

i vehemently hate the TSA and we have had out throwdowns more than once now (don't tell me to throw away VERY expensive toiletries because i didn't have time to check my bags and they were .5 ounces over the limit AND THEN bash my home city). I knew they can only tell you to gtfo and not much more than that. But i wasn't sure how far they can take their douchebaggery.

needless to say i drive everywhere, it's more fun anyway.

very well said. I think more people in the US are realizing that we are slipping further down the list and it's starting to bug a lot of people...

i'd really like actual freedom though, it's the best of the self regulating systems.

Who gives a sh!t about civil liberties and your right to privacy? Definitely NOT the TSA or HS. Both organizations are a joke and a threat to your rights as a US citizen.

The underwear bomber incident and the followed botched attempts to save face are evidence enough that the TSA is incompetent and needs to be disbanded.

However since I'm in a typing kinda mood, I'll bite.

It's called cause and effect. For instance, the terrorist try to blow us up we make security harder at the airport. They try to light their balls on fire, we make security tighter again. Eventually, hopefully we will get to the point where we throw PC out the window and start profiling like Israel does. But I imagine it will take a lot of Americans to die before we do that. What a pity.

All righty then. So what's your plan for airport security? Oh your plan is no plan just let people walk willy nilly through the airport, guns on planes, SNAKES ON PLANES, holy shit.

Then one of your famliy members gets killed because the US Gov didn't protect you? Cmon man you don't believe that do you?
 
I dont like having to wipe my hdd and reinstall my os just to fly out of the country, but I sure as hell dont mind when you hear the horror stories that come up about some guy with something that bugs someone and they impound that. I would rather be open with a wiped drive and get to keep my laptop. Of course I encrypt it anyways just to make things harder for them...=)
 
Hey what do you know our tyrannical government is acting tyrannical. Gee what a concept. I wonder what it will take before people will realize that this is NOT what they want. The very people proposing such tyranny are the ones that have been forcing us to adjust to it by gradually implementing it. The crazy thing is that BOTH major parties in this country have now subscribed to this philosophy of exchanging freedom for security. The unfortunate truth is that today in 2010 we a FARRRRRRRRRRRRRR beyond 1984 in terms of what big brother is capable of and what they are actually actively doing to spy on the American people. All in the name of "fighting terrorism". To those of you who think that this is just a way for our government to protect us from the bad people you are completely wrong. The power has just simply gone to their heads and they are pushing for more and more control.

plan is easy, revert back to pre 9/11, throw the entire government out and start fresh and their is clearly at best incompetence at all levels, and at worst corrupt officials that would bring harm their citizens, and you know... work how most nations on this planet work that are not going into or out of the US.

or my personal solution, everyone stop using air services until most of them go bankrupt and attack the TSA and govt for shit services...granted the way this country works they will get bailed out and nationalized, but meh... that just gives us all another reason to not give them out money.
