trying to use SATA as additional storage

currently using a 80gb wd IDE w/ windows xp and i just got a maxtor 300gb sata 3gb hdd. i have the dfi nf3ultra motherboard and all im trying to do is hook up the sata hd and use it for additional space / progs etc. however as soon as i hook up the yellow sata wire and continue to start up the machine it freezes at the loading windows screen .. hd didnt come with instructions help anyone? :D
 
Well if yout getting the windows boot screen that's good, means it's attempting to boot off the correct drive. I'd check bios settings, but not sure what I'd look for off hand.

Also, try other sata ports just to be sure.
 
Serial-ATA : Enabled =) and ive tried ports 1-4, its freezing at the black windows xp loading screen pretty much instantly
 
So, can I assume that when you unplug the drive, that windows boots fine? Do you have any better results booting into safe mode?

Can you list the model # of the new HD?
 
its a maxtor maxline 3 300gb SATA hd.. model is 7V300F0 ... i tried disconnecting my IDE and i was going to simply install windows on the sata and then reformat the ide and use that for storage... i slipstreamed sp2 into my windows xp cd and began the process... but as i got to the install windows blue screen i ran into the following problems which left me right back where i am now ....

it got to "Examining 286182 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi.." and it stayed there for a goood.... 2 hrs or so... when i woke up i checked on it and it was finallu passed that screen...i tried to create a partition and it said i couldn't and that the disk could not be accessed just got the drive about 4 days ago from zipzoomfly.com and have had nothing but problems
 
You should include the textmode Raid drivers from the floppy (or the mobo manufacturers website) into your Nlite slipstream install. WinXP is not smart enough to detect your SATA controllers properly.
 
how do i include them? i had a friend from DFI site zip and send me the contents of the floppy but to integrate id just do the same as sp2 right, :integrate dir and what not? however since im not running RAID, 1 IDE and 1 SATA i was told the nforce3 chipset didnt require drivers to recognize a single SATA drive
 
Use a program called Nlite to make a slipstreamed XP install disk. You can include "text-mode" drivers to install your NF3 sata drivers into a custom install disk. You can even remove stuff you will not use and set it up for unattended installation.

The other option is to have that floppy handy and when windows asks for 3rd party or other drivers, hit that F6 key and insert floppy.
