I'm trying to get an older Seagate ST380021A 80GB running to recover some data without dropping hundreds of dollars for someone else to do it. About the only things I haven't tried is replacing the PCB logic board, manually moving the platter, and the freezer trick.
Originally, the hard drive was the main drive on an old Dell and just stopped working one day displaying the message "Cannot start operating system." The BIOS detected the hard drive just fine, it just wouldn't boot. I tried reformatting it, but it would get so far and then fail. It would go through Scan Disk fine and report no errors. I pulled it from the Dell and attached it to my other computer with an external enclosure, but I'm still not able to access it. It is marked with a yellow "!" in Device Manager and says "Code 10: Cannot Start Device." I googled the error code, but most recommended fixes involved drivers which doesn't help me.
My main question is, is there any way to know if the PCB has been fried? I don't want to spend $40 on a new PCB if it's not the problem. Are there any other things I can try? Thanks in advance.
