Pentium 4 w/ 2.53 ghz
512 mb ddr

is what im currently running. yea i know i need more ram for BF2, and im planning on buying some more.. however my mobo maxes out at 1 gig. and ive been hearing 2gb is required for excellent gameplay. 1 gb and 2 gb really make a big difference? anyways, i think im gonna buy a new card no matter what. its either

PNY - Verto GeForce 7600 GS Graphics Card
512MB DDR2 memory; AGP interface; S-video output; dual 400MHz RAMDAC

or

ATI - RADEON X1600 PRO Graphics Card
512MB memory; AGP interface; S-video outputs; 400MHz clock speed

and lately the ATi x800XT has come to mind. why is it cheaper for this card? it has a ridiculous core clock speed for this price..

X800XT will demolish both the 7600GS and the X1600. The reason why the X800XT is cheaper though is becuase it's older tech. Both the 7600GS and the X1600 have SM3 and newer tech, while the X800 only has Sm2 (that goes for the whole series). But the one advantage of the X800 series cards is that they have pure speed. The X800XT would be good for BF2, the 7600GS would be the card to get if you want tech and okay performance, and I wouldn't recommend the X1600 to a dead person just because the performance is such crap for the price.

You should be able to run medium settings if you have 1 gig ram...

Even those old motherboards with 2 memory slots should take 1 gig of ram for each slot...

You really need 2gigs for battlefield if you want to play on high settings...

As for video card... Buy whatever suits your monitor needs and depending on your power supply...

800xt will beat both...

I agree....and you can play BF2 with 1 gig (I did for a while) but 2 is definetly recommended.

thats interesting.. what exactly is SM3? affects looks?

and i heard they made the 6700GT in AGP.. but i cant seem to find any retailers.

All it does add HDR (High Dynamic Range) rendering.. It makes light effects have more dynamic ranges... Only a few games support it correctly. Not really a viable option for those low end cards unless you run on low or medium settings...

7600GT is kind of expensive at $170+ for what it is... But it should be similar performance to 800xt...

thanks for the really fast response. i think im set on getting the x800xt.. do you know any good sites to get em at a good price?

Don't even consider this card.

EDIT----oops, sorry, I didn't really read through the whole thread, I just kind of paniced when I saw you were even considering an x1600pro......

there are alot of guides to run bf2 with 1gb, you have to disable the intro videos, they load to ram........ and there are other ways to decrease how much ram it take... aslo lower your window xp load... my bf2 uses aboyt 750 mb of ram... so if you have a gig then try and get XP to use around 200mb-300mb otherwise it will pagefile and no matter what video card you have it will studder... my 7800gtx studdered with 1 gb of ram and 2gb it runs butter smooth... but like i said when everything is loaded i have about 600mb left of ram out of 2gb...

the 7600gt is much better.. but the gs is good... also the 850xt is a really good card

BF2 ran fine with my old X800 and 1GB ram..All I did was disable the intro movies and thats it..no studdering or anything..It was just slow to alt-tab out and exit the game.

I reccomend the x850xt, thats what i am using and all i play is bf2 on high settings, runs very smoothly, i also have one gig. It runs great. X850XT is great for the price i paid 100 with rebate from newegg, its at 115 i think.

BF2 run on my A64 4000 & 6800 256mb with 1GB with 1280x1204 + high settings in everything but textures in medium and 2AA without any problems at all.

When I upgraded to 2GB I was able to increase textures to high and have very fast loading time which is very good when you like to fly ;)

If you can buy a 7600GT and you will be able to use 4AA with supersampling :p
