Trying to rule out PSU

I'm looking at a comp for someone and its not posting, now the PSU is only 250W. I guess it was adequate seems the pc did run to begin with! DVD,CDROM,Floppy & HDD.

Now I have an old crappy 230W PSU from a dinosaur, that I know is good, tried it and still no post. At this point I'd unplugged non-essentials, so basically it was just powering the mobo and cpu.

So can I safely conclude the PSU is not at fault.

Nope. What are the system specs? 230/250W isn't very much...

Thought that might be the answer, I don't wanna pull my current box appart unless I can help it, but it does have a 400W PSU, just in case.

The box in question is a Compaq 5335EA (six years old), its got 1.3 Athlon XP I believe, 128MB SDRAM, onboard gfx & sound, 40GB HDD, generic DVD, generic CDROM & floppy (All expense spared!)

It shipped with a 250W psu for all that so surely 230W just to see if the mobo fires up is reasonable, or not?

Edit:

BTW, all the drives are unplugged and the memory is out. Its just a mobo and cpu. Yet still no post beeps.

:)

If it were up to me I'd let it go, but there's maybe a bit of cash involved!

Anyway I tried my 400W psu and still no joy so its got to be a mobo issue.

Cheers guys.

If the system was working perfectly, it wouldn't be worth more than $20!

Dont waste your time on a mobo. IIRC, compaq uses/used a propietary pin out on the PSU/MB. So, plugging in a standard power supply to the board will not allow it to power up either. You are gonna need a compaqified power supply to know for SURE. And that aint gonna be cheap. Shitcan the box.

Quoted for the truth.

I have a decade old Compaq and the floppy drive went bad a few years ago, had to buy the exact model that failed and would come to $50 total...didn't bother. Any part replacement on that machine will cost you more than it's worth.
