Like the title states, I'm trying to get an old socket 754 setup up running stable. Here are the specs;

  • Asus K8V SE Deluxe Socket 754
  • AMD Athlon 3400+
  • 2x512 Corsair XMS Platinum DDR 400
  • ATI X850 Pro AGP
  • Antec Basiq 350 PSU
I am running XP 32 SP3 with all updates. I am also using the latest drivers for the hardware. Everything runs well, but when I leave the computer running for an extended period of time, the screen goes black. This also happens after a cold boot. After the screen goes black, it's almost impossible to get the computer up & running again.

Here's what I've done so far.

  • Made sure I updated to the latest bios for this board.
  • Cleared cmos (many times)
  • Pulled battery, replaced battery.
  • Ran both optimized & fail safe bios settings.
  • Tried many drivers for video card.
  • Pulled X850 & tried 9800 pro, same result.
Any insight & advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I didn't check my event logger but I did try a different psu without success.

You running a lcd?

No. I'm running a 22" CRT.

what do you mean by this?

When I boot in to Windows, all is well for a period of time. Upon a reboot or a cold boot, the computer will not post. There are no error code beeps of any kind. I thought it was the video card, but I had the same problem with a second card. I also tried 2 different psu's as well.

There are also times when in Windows when I lose my display signal. Again upon rebooting, I get no display.

My gut feeling is the agp slot went bad, but I'm not sure. I've seen some refurb mobos for $20. I may buy one.
