Trying to quiet system down

Right now I have an Antec case with a quiet 120mm fan and another quiet 90mm one. The GPU has a silent cooler however the CPU fan is louder than I would like.

I have an AMD X2 5000+ with the stock HS fan on it. I know there are aftermarket HS fans out there but I wanted to know about a different route.

I don't mind the noise while gaming, too quiet to hear over the game. However while my system is running and the house is quiet is when I want to quiet it down. I thought AMD Cool and Quiet would help but no go, or it isn't working.

My system doesn't suspend as it is a server for media around the house.

So, can I get a quieter fan on the stock HS, configure AMD cool and quiet better or use a third party fan controller to slow it down when it is idle, or should I just replace it?

did you install the cool 'n quiet drivers in your windows? its actually an error with vista that does not natively support cool 'n quiet.. try checking your motherboard manufacture to see if they have the cool 'n quiet drivers.. also check your bios to see if it has a fan controller built into the bios to see if you can control the fan speeds depending on the actual temp of the cpu..

Actually I am running XP SP3 and did install the Cool and Quiet, just didn't notice a difference at all.

Are you willing to spend any money on this at all? You can get a S1283 for 36.99 (26.99 after MIR) or the HDT-S96 for 24.99 (19.99 after MIR) both of which will out perform the stock cooler for noise to cooling ratio, and will get the most bang for your buck. What does the stock cooler have on it? 80, 92mm? Whatever the case a good pwm fan for it is going to cost you 10 bucks or more, why not spend the extra? As you will get much more for your money with a better cooler.

I think if it bothers you that much a fan change is not going to have a big enough impact on the sound level to be worth it. Get a better cooler, you will be glad you did, get some better TIM wile you are at it. ;)

Going to look at that and see. If I can I will go that route and knock the fan down when the system is idle.
Otherwise I think I will look into a third party application to do it.

Oh my god!! You are so right! Why didn't I think of that.

Really you freaken noob! Gosh.

What are your temps like? Is it because the cool and quiet not working or is it just running to hot? What are the temps like in the case? What kind of air flow set up do you have? I know you said a 120 and a 90mm, but not how they are blowing and how they are set in the case. Do you have good cable management? Is it a dual slot GPU or is the hot air staying in the case? Have you put better TIM on the HS? What kind of RPM is the fan turning when it starts to annoy you?

Temps are running around 40 C at idle in the case and about the same for the CPU. During heavy gaming the temps can go to upper 40s - mid 50s for the CPU and a little lower for the case.

Case is Antec micro atx tower with a side chute for the CPU fan to blow air out. 120mm is in the back below the PSU and blows out, 90mm is in the bottom front and blows into the case. HD is at the bottom of the case and cable management is great with all wires bundled out of the way.

The CPU fan bothers me more at idle. The computer is in another room near the bedroom and I still hear it. During gaming there is an increase in noise however it isn't a bother then because I have the speakers on and can't hear it over the game.

Really, it bothers me more at idle. Tonight I am going to go into the BIOS to see if there are temp controls for fan speed and scale the CPU back a little at idle if I can.

I went into the BIOS on my Asrock board and it does have something called "Quiet CPU'. I enabled it and set the temp to 50C but have not noticed a difference.

if i were you id try and get another heatsink that uses a 120mm, since im pretty sure the stock amd uses a little, higher rpm fan.

and if the fan that comes with the heatsink is still too loud for you, id try a quiet 4 pin PWM fan like the nexus that you can control the rpm with.
