Trying to install IDE card...not recognizing boot hd?

Okay...I have one HDD, a 40GB one, and two other drives, a Zip and a CD-RW. I am trying to install a second HDD but I only have two IDE slots on my mobo. I got an Adaptec IDE Card, and want to attach my two HDDs to it, it is dual-channel, and have by Zip and CD-RW installed on the mobo channels. When I hooked only the 40GB drive to the card, my computer did not boot into Windows, stating that there was no boot drive. What is the easiest way for my computer to recognize that my boot drive is on the IDE card?

Also, the card's box said I can hook Zip and CD-RW drives to the card, should I do that and have the HDD's on the mobo IDE channels?
 
Why dont you just put the Zip and cd drive on one ide cable and the hdds on the other? (dont forget to set master/slave)
 
yeah, your motherboard has to support booting to pci controller for that to even work... could be wrong tho

From what I understand, if you do that, transferring files b/w the two HDDs will be slooooow, and that is something I will do quite a bit of...
 
First off, poke around in your BIOS in the boot order section to see if you even have an option of booting off of a PCI card.
Secondly, you have 4 IDE devices, and 2 channels on your motherboard... am I missing something here? You don't need a PCI card for this at all.
If you're worried about speed issues with having two hard drives on the same channel, then have each hard drive be a master of a channel, and put the zip and the cd-rom as slaves. I'm not so sure, however, that it will be sloowwwwwwwww. It's been discussed before, and I honestly can't remember what was determined, lol.
If you are dead set on using the PCI card, then put your boot hard drive alone on the primary IDE on the mobo, put the zip and cd-rom on the secondary, and attached the 2nd hard drive to the card.

The bios on the controller card seems to me that it is trying to boot the connected drive.
I recomend connecting both HDDs to the PCI controller. Make sure that the drive with your OS is on the primary channel.

I ahve a sdetup like that. works great. On the MB connectors, I have a cdr on the primary and a DVD on the secondary. No reason really but every device has it's own channel.
