my friend just turned 21 and i want to get him a present with out him knowing.
ok quick run down

he has an old sony vaio computer

P4 1.5 ghz
512 ram
9600XT

well he doesnt get 100 frames on CS 1.6 more like 75
and gets like 35 frames in source

he says he read some where along time ago that the reason for this was his mobo was agp was 4X and not 8X but he cant find the info anymore.

i want to get him a mobo with 8x agp if thats the case(unless u can think of something else)

EDIT
my questions
1) what socket is his p4 EDIT hes socket 478
2) what else can be causing this ....PSU? im sure 9600XT doesnt require that much of a power load. is his CPU too low? im sure its suffiecient enuf for CS1.6 so i dont think its the problem.

Almost all socket 478 boards now have AGP 8x, as in you'd have to TRY to find one that only supports up to 4x.

How much money do you have to work with?

The FPS issue is primarily processor and video card, though a lot more on the video card. I wouldn't deal with the PSU if you're just looking for a new motherboard.

well as for the moeny im sure 50 would be enuf right?.......he has pc133 ram i dont see many motherboards thats support that.

im sure his 1.5 ghz is enuf to push CS1.6 to its fullest isnt it? i could be wrong tho so ima try to throw it out of the question.

im using a temp x600Xt adn it works on source and 1.6 GREAT!! and they are basiclly the same card.

His CS: Source FPS is HEAVILY limited by his CPU. Take this into consideration: I have a computer, its a A64 2800+ with 1GB of RAM, but it only has a 9600 128MB vid card in it, not even a Pro, yet I managed to get around 50ish FPS easily at 1024x768 and with every set at high except for shaders and with AA and AF off, I can generally even do 4xAF without to much trouble on certain maps, and also I'd say my average is much closer to 60 in all reality, its rather playable. So I'd say he's pretty badly CPU limited if he just wants to play Source.

his settings are all LOW so its cpu? and not the 4X? i guess ima take your word for it.

Holy crap...really? My 9600XT hovers around 35ish FPS as well at 800×600, high, no AA, AF.

....w....t.....f....

hmm you can probably ignore that other comment on video card being more important...

blah...time to check drivers and all that crap...
