I'm just starting, and been doing a bit of research and running different tries in an attempt to get this working. I'd gotten some initial success but long tests on Prime95 showed I still had some ways to go.

The setup is
Mobo - ASUS P6T - BIOS v0801
CPU - Intel Core i7 920 - D0
RAM - 3x2GB DDR3-1600 OCZ Platinum ( 7-7-7-24, 1.65V )
Video - XFX Radeon 5850HD

OS - Win7 64bit

The situation I'm having, and I'm not sure how to interpret, is that when I run Prime95, large TFF test, a few cores will fail while the rest will continue working. This happened at 3.2GHz (memory running at 1280MHz), where after 12 hours of testing 4 cores still worked and at 3Ghz, after 12 hours only 5 cores where still working.

The first core took at least half an hour to fail, but I can't tell for certain when it happened since I start the test in the morning and don't check again until I come home from work. It's not the same cores failing, at least.

I doubt it's the temps, unless the readings are wrong. CPU temps went as high as 60s and high 50s at full load. Not sure what is failing here.

Another thing is I can't get the memory to run at the advertised speed, or even close. Which shouldn't be a surprise, since I can't get the rig stable in the first place.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any help.
 
So, running the test again, two of the cores failed after 1 hour 36 minutes of operation. Temp was stable at 66C according to ProbeII. Any idea what might cause behavior like this?
 
Not sure what method you are using to OC so can't help much until you tell us how you are attempting to OC. Are you using auto managed voltages or tweaking the voltages manually? Which CPU HSF are you using? I suggest you do it as per the below guide and report back your results.

Ah, my bad. I am modifying the speeds and voltages from the BIOS. Settings:

AI Overclock set to Manual,
CPU ratio set to Auto,
Speedstep Enabled,
Turbo Disabled

The memory sticks are supposed to run at 1,65V, but the higher I set the voltage the less stable the system gets.
 
Increasing the BCLK and CPU volt up a little leads to less time before the first fail

12 minutes before a failure. If I upped the DRAM volt up to 1.60, the test failed before a minute passed.

Trying with looser timings now, 8-8-8-24, DRAM volt back down to 1.5
