Trying to choose which card

Hello all. I've been shadowing the forum for a while, but figured it is time to join this great resource of information. I've been outside the loop of hardware and gaming for the last 4-5 years. I just built myself an i7 rig, and I've been debating on which video card to get. System specs:

i7 @ 3.8
6gb @ 1333
22'' display @ 1680x1050
Current video card: Gigabyte 4350 (my backup video card)

Initially I was thinking the gtx 285, but I'm really don't think I need it at this resolution. Now, I'm thinking of getting the 4890 as it is $100 cheaper than the 285, even though it is probably still overkill. My goal is to play crysis with little/no lag, and therefore max out most other games as an extension of this goal. I would like the card to have some headroom in terms of future games.

What do you guys suggest I do?? It seems like a good time to buy a card.

Thanks!

My friend has a Phenom 9950 with a Radeon 4870 and with Crysis Warhead at Enthusiast settings (no AA though) he gets very playable framerates on his 46" HDTV (which runs at the same res that you're running I believe). I'd imagine that a 4890 would do the trick, esp. if you're considering OCing it.

for crysis? a 4870 1gb or a GTX 260. If you have the extra the 4890 is just about on par with GTX285 but is overkill for all but a few games (crysis being one of them)

I'd say anything over a 4850/250gts is gonna be just fine. Tell us a budget and we'll give you an idea.

GTX 275 is the way to go. As a reseller myself I've tried the HD4890 and GTX 275 back to back.
With the same 240 stream processors as the GTX 285/280, and healthy clock speeds of 633Mhz factory..the performance is VERY clode to that of the 285 for ALOT less.

Except the benchmarks pretty much disagree with and generally the HD 4890 is a better performer than the 275. Plus when overclocked, which is easy as pie, it topples the GTX 285 in some benchmarks.

Thanks for the input everyone! I think I'll go for the 4890 since it is already out and slightly cheaper as far as I can tell. I'm thinking it should give me some processing power in reserve for upcoming games (except crysis). These are some good times for us video card consumers.
