Trust OCCT to update DirectX?

Trying to use OCCT to test my new card but it wants to update my DirectX. Dxdiag.exe shows DirectX ver 11 (but notes it could be 11.1, I think 11.1 and 11.2 are only for Windows 8). Should I trust OCCT to update my DirectX?

I'm leary as the company is in Russia but I really want to run OCCT, not a similar GPU test. I don't want to update my Windows 7 for DirectX and the MS page for 'Platform update for Windows 7 SP1' doesn't list any DirectX improvements. Plus I think DirectX 11 is as high as I can go for Windows 7.

OCCT forums are offline now but I don't find any search results about this anywhere.

Also, would anyone be able to tell me how to turn off the highlighted buttons for the other tests, like on the cpu tab, in OCCT?

Thank you,

Mac

I wouldn't trust it. Always download from primary sources if an update is needed. Just as a side note, I always disconnect the ethernet cable from my PC when running OCCT.

To update DirectX, just download and run dxwebsetup from Microsoft. There have been a few SDK package updates to DirectX that it may want to download.

As a side, I would recommend using MSi Kombustor to stress test your video card, even though you want to use OCCT. OCCT just uses a derivation of Furmark for its GPU test, and Kombustor is also based on that same test.

Armenius,

Yeah I try to download from primary as well, used to trust Cnet but they've gone south. So far I've had no crap from Softpedia. But having read how Kaspersky has behaved ...

Well I like OCCT's test vram feature but I suppose I'll run Kombustor and Heaven and look at the one from EVGA. Didn't think of disconnecting. Thanks for the SDK link. Gotta get this off my plate and game.

Many thanks,

Mac

Even if your system has DX11 or DX12, it still needs elements from the DX9 Redist package for certain games and programs. Most monitoring programs, like Precision or Afterburner, will attempt to install it in some fashion. That's more than likely what's attempting to do.

However OCCT has the artifact detector which Kombustor (last time I checked) does not have. The artifact detector is quite good IMHO, if your GPU botches up rendering something even slightly the counter goes up and you know your overclock is not good. Stable maybe but not good.

Anyway, just download the dxwebsetup from Microsoft and run it. You may lack an update or runtime the program needs to work.

Thanks DarkAngel & MaZa. I realized I set up my XP drive to game with so I'm less worried about anything hosing that. I may give OCCT a try. Just got a Tier 1 offer for back in IT and I can barely think about gaming right now. But I appreciate all the help.

HF rocks,

Mac

I like and trust OCCT, but I'd just handle any updates on my own if it were me.
