Okay, I'm interested in buying a new CPU/MOBO and have a guy convincing me to buy his 'Intel Penitum 4 3.0GHZ with HT socket 478 800mhz Prescott E and MSI 856PE Neo2 P Series w/ Core Cell 2x SATA 2x IDE 1x floppy connector GB LAN 478' for $220 Canadian. He says he's got it at 3.75 GHz and it's running stable. Is this true? Is this a decent combo? Is it a good deal?

Well, if you're looking to go the intel route, you should know that that processor is worth almost 200CAD in and of it's self (new). Couple that with the mobo (which is actually pretty nice) and yeah... I'd say that it's worth it. Try and talk him down closer to 200$ or get him to throw something else in.

The 3.75ghz claim, however, I have no clue on. Each processor and motherboard is capable of something different. Having said this, with good cooling, it's not uncommon to see a P4 get a 500-750mhz overclock... emphasis on *with good cooling.*

I can't find much on google about that board, you might want to research the board a bit more and see what options/if any/ it offers for overclocking. Actually, what I'm reading right now assures me that it IS an AGP board, so already you'd need to get an older AGP graphics card... Shoving a 7800 GS agp card in it would be *more* than enough for most games. The NB fan is supposedly silent, and there are lots of options to tweak in the bios. Check it out here:

I'd do it, although that OC would be on the high end of the northwood P4's. For value, that combo is alright, although you do have to account for the fact that it is aging and that it has been significantly 'clocked for a while which may shorten its lifespan with you.

Don't forget that within this year, the 775 true dual-core cpu's will come out and the Intel early reports look like world beaters.
