Hi all,

So, I've been lurking in the UltraSharp threads for over a year. Lots of great info and insight to be had here, and last year I ended up getting a u2211h. It's a great display... except that, as documented here and elsewhere, these 6-bit/A-FRC panels don't play very nice with some Macs, causing a 'pinstripe' dithering artifact for certain colors. Whereas the problem could be mitigated in Snow Leopard, 10.7 Lion makes the problem resistant to any troubleshooting or workarounds.

First, a sanity check: although it seems the case based on my reading, do you folks think that the problem is being caused by the fact that the panel is 6-bit and uses A-FRC? If an 8-bit panel can indeed rectify this situation, what would be the best budget option to replace the u2211h? All I've found so far are the HP ZR24w and the Dell u2410, but they're larger and more expensive. Are there any 21.5" panels out there that are true 8-bit? I suppose I could also track down a 2209wa, but I'd likely notice the drop in resolution.

PRAD.de gave it a very good rating, the NEC EA231 is also true 8-bit. Both of these panels are much better than the 2209wa, the Asus is the best. Don't know of any 21.5" models.

I don't have a MAC but I remember hearing about issues with 6bit panels. Hopefully fellow Mac user ToastyX will chime into this thread and give you the lowdown.

Eizos new ev2335 has an 8bit panel too i think, it might be 6bit+ frc though, it's kinda hard to find info atm.
 
dell 2209wa is 6bit+afcr too just like all e-IPS. Still there shouldn't be any banding because of it as new A-FCR is able to reconstruct more bitdepth than needed for good 8bit gamma.

it's much more possible that OSX adds some dithering. Had you tried windows?
also are you using some color profile or change gamma in any way?

Thanks for the suggestions: The Asus PA238Q looks like the most affordable at the moment so I'll be keeping an eye on it.

Yeah, as far as we can tell, it is indeed OS X's dithering that conflicts with the Dell's, because on GPUs without temporal dithering (e.g. the old Intel GMA 950), the problem doesn't appear. Messing around with color management only shifts which colors exhibit the artifacts. Windows works fine.

I've already taken up the issue with Apple support and they've forwarded the issue to the OS team apparently, but who knows if it's been reported enough for them to pay attention.
