A few days ago I noticed my computer taking a very long time for some tasks (updating steam, navigating the filesystem). After hanging for a long time, the system would eventually lock up and need hard resetting. I wasn't sure if it was just the HDD itself, so I reinstalled win on a new ssd and everything was fine for about an hour. The same problems kept creeping up again, however. I figured maybe it was the sata hub on the motherboard, and tried all of the sata ports with the same result.

At this point, it seems to me that the motherboard is the issue, but I'm open to any other suggestions. See my signature for specs. The SSD I used was a Crucial M4 128gb.

I'm wondering if now would be a good time to merely replace the motherboard or if cheap upgrade options exist that will also resolve my issue. Is LGA1155 a current architecture or is it in decline? I know if I switch away from that platform, I'll also need a new processor. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried a barebones bench test to confirm once and for all that the motherboard's bad?

Assuming that it is, you have to decide whether you want to stick with Socket 1155 or go with Haswell (and Socket 1150). What features do you need on the motherboard?

The system still posts, and will run for 15-30 minutes before locking up again. I still plan to run tests on individual components, however.

I'll say that I'm out of the loop on what's new in terms of hardware, but I don't need to overclock, and don't use any expansion cards. If I stick with 1155, is the 2600K still a viable chip? It seems like they've held their price pretty well. What would be a good replacement motherboard if I was to stay with 1155? (All other components being the same)

The i7-2600K is still a viable chip and can last you years depending on your workload.

If you want a cheap "replacement" board, consider an Intel B75-based board like the MSI B75MA-P45. Granted, it only comes with one SATA 6Gb/s port (the other five are SATA 3Gb/s), but you only have one SSD, right?
