Hi, my computer just stopped posting yesterday.

It had been shutting down randomly (like it lost power) for a few weeks, but yesterday it won't even post when I turn it on, just black screen.

Now the shutting down part led me to believe it was having a PSU problem, so I tried a new one and it won't even power on with the new PSU while the default one powers on but doesn't post

This is an alienware computer (about 5 years old). I don't know if they are incompatible with other hardware configurations

Any tips greatly appreciated

Bump, found out the problem with the shut down was the cpu overheating

Is there a way to underclock the voltage with software? My bios won't let me go under 1.5, it will however let me underclock the cpu speed

I need less voltage for stability until my new heatsink gets here

For Pentium 4 northwood socket 478

Edit no voltmod

download clockgen or softfsb or setfsb. or doesnt the p4 have some kind of thermal throttling feature? why do you figure the new psu wouldnt work if the problem was your heatsink?
