Troubles with XP Install

*Sigh* I am beginning to think building my own system is more trouble than it's worth....but anyway...

I cannot for the life of me get XP Pro to install on my new system with a Seagate 300GB SATA hard drive. The system boots from the XP CD, I hit F6 to load my motherboard's SATA drivers, and setup copies all the files and reboots. After the reboot one of three things happens: 1) immediately after seeing "verifying DMI pool data" the system just stops; 2) the system tries to boot from the CD drive (when I have set the hard drive as first boot device); or 3) I get an error message saying "A disk read error occurred. Press CTRL ALT DEL to reboot". If I do this and reboot, the same thing happens again.

The SATA drive is brand new and is recognized by the BIOS just fine. I'm intending to use it as the main drive with an older 45GB IDE drive as secondary storage. The older drive has Windows 2000 installed on it, and the computer will boot from it if I set it to do so. It just for some reason will not boot from the SATA drive at all during XP setup. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm completely stumped at this point.

is your HD sata2? if so does your mobo supports it? if so check the HD jumper.

Are u sure your mobo needs to install the SATA drivers?
Try updating the BIOS
 
The drive is SATA 2 and yep, the motherboard does support it. The motherboard also already has the latest BIOS. I'm not sure if the motherboard SATA drivers need to be installed, but I do know that the first two times I tried to install XP without installing the drivers manually, the same thing happened.

The jumper on the HD is set to limit to 1.5 Gb/s. Should that be set for 3 Gb/s operation? (And if so, how do I get the darn jumper off? It seems to be near impossible to get ahold of...)

EDIT: Took the jumper off....that had no effect whatsoever.
 
Okay, I managed to get XP to install to the SATA drive, finally. I had to disconnect the secondary PATA drive AND the internal PATA Zip Drive. Once this was done, XP copied files to the SATA drive, rebooted, and then completed install from the SATA drive. Once install was done, I hooked up the secondary drive and the Zip drive again and suddenly the system will NOT boot from the SATA drive anymore. I'm back to "A disk read error has occurred. Press ctrl+alt+del to restart." I tried it again with just the Zip drive connected and the PATA hard drive disconnected, but it's the same old deal. Why will the system not boot from the SATA drive? It is set as the first boot device, as it should be, and now has XP installed on it, yet the system still will not boot from it unless I leave the Zip drive and PATA hard drive (which are on the same IDE channel) disconnected. Any ideas as to what is going on here?
