Troubles with 6600 gt

I recently purchased a PNY 6600 GT AGP 8x thinking it would be the solution to most of my troubles. I was just looking for an interim card before going higher end pci-express (since id need a new mobo on top of the card). however i am still having some pretty stop and go running of half-life 2 and chronicles of riddick. as far as half life 2 i run it at all recommended settings plus AA and AF one setting higher than recommended. the result of these settings is choppy gameplay and major stalls at certain points (ie a battle beginning with a lot of AI being introduced). As far as riddick, when i try to use the night vision it seemingly turns on and off say if im close to a wall or corner. below is my system configuration. any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. im just perplexed at how my system could be running so shottily with the components ive installed.
thanks,
phishingjimi

2.53 P4
1 gig XMS corsair RAM
PNY 128 MB AGP 6600 GT
Abit IS7 mobo
some stock IDE 100 gig hard drive

Most likely your CPU is to blame as both the games is heavy on the CPU and memory.
Had the same problem until I put some more memory in.

You could try newer drivers for the graphic card if you haven't.

That processor is allmost 3Ghz, how is that the...oh, its a P4 :p
Would something around an A64 3000 fix his problem?

Hehe, yup :D

Just dial down the AA and AF. Don't forget that the 6600GT is mid-range. If you want better results you need to spend twice as much.

I dunno, my htpc has a r9700p with an xp3200 and it runs COR and HL2 just fine. No chops at all. HL2 @ 1280x960 2XAF no AA 52 FPS average. Riddick though runs at 1024x768 45 FPS dipping to 32 in spots, but no choppiness at all. Could be a setting in you're bios or a driver conflict.

He runs AA, which isn't going to be the best on a card with a 128 bit memory interface.

I´ve got the same card at higher settings than he has it on HL2 and CS:S (all high, 4aa8af) without any hitches at all (Except certain strange spots like the CT spawn in office).

Have you defragged lately? That can be the cause of hitching sometimes. Also in HL2 try turning auto-saves off, that makes it skip a little bit.

I have an athlon 64 3200+, 1gb memory, and a 6600gt. I can play the game with around 60-65 fps with every setting turned all the way up. Even the AF and AA.

True. Though in certain games i can dial up AA pretty well, just not new OGL based games :) My 6800GT/A643400+ however chews em up with AA/AF. But the venerable old r9700p is still a great card. If you can deal with minimal/meduim aa/af at medium res the 6600GT appears to be a really nice card. I will probably replace the r9700p with a 6600GT in the HTPC because my wife uses that pc to game on.
