Ok, so I've built a HTPC system from my old mobo, a couple old WDs, a DVD-R and CD-R. Originally, everything ran fine (except of coarse some issues I had between video-TV signal and my PVR - which I'm almost sure will be fixed with a new PVR and TVTool). Of coarse, with all that I had done to troubleshoot the initial issues I had, too much crap had been installed and uninstalled... I decided it best to start from scratch with XP again.
First, let me tell you that I've created several variations of an unattended/customized WinXP CD. The problem is, of coarse, that I only have one floppy in the house, and it's in use on my main rig. I need the floppy for the SATA driver which doesn't come with my copy of XP. So I customized XP to include the driver for the text-mode setup.
Now, when XP loads the initial setup, I see both WDs. I choose the smaller of the two, leaving the other for video storage, and quick format using NTFS. All appears to be going well. When setup is complete and I'm ready to start installing other drivers, etc., my other WD won't show up. I figured this was because my drive must have died. Not wanting to accept that, of coarse, I reinstalled XP with several variations to make sure that I didn't remove something I needed. I'm thinking "that's weird, it shows up in text-mode, but not when the OS is finished installing."
Original specs:
ASUS A7N8X 2.0d
AMD 2500+ Barton - not OCed because of temps (1.8GHz default)
1 Gig 2700 Corsair @ 2.5-2-2-5 (2x 256 on channel 0 & 1 respectively, 1x 512 on channel 2 - yes, timings matched on all ram)
WD 30Gig 7200 on IDE 0
WD 40Gig 7200 IDE w/SATA adapter (to keep it on a seperate channel)
DVD-R & CD-R on IDE 1
Gainward Ti4800SE 128 AGP
ATI USB PVR
kWorld PVR 838 (or something like that... dark picture which sucks)
So thinking after all that the drive must be dead, I went to newegg and decided to buy two WD 80 Gig SATA drives. I finally got them plugged into the machine this morning, went into XP install with a new variation of XP with almost nothing removed (languages and extras directory is all I removed). Again, all drives show up (BIOS reported both WD drives and CD/DVD drives and SATA had no issues with my two new drives). So I chose one of my new drives for the OS, deleted and recreated the partitions on the two IDEs (MBR had to be on the 30 Gig) and off it goes with the install.
XP finishes up, gives me an error about a file missing but doesn't say which one and then finishes booting for the first time. I open My Computer to find NO IDE drives at all. Just 2 SATA drives. I open Device Manager and find the IDE controller running ok, but only two "SCSI" drives, no IDEs.
I would LOVE any help on this as I have no clue what would cause drives to show from XP setup and the BIOS, but XP refuses to see them. I did search Google before coming here, and the only thing I saw that remotely sounded right was ntldr.dll or something like that, but I didn't get that error, at least not that I'm aware. I just have no idea what's "missing" that XP needs, and have no idea how to get IDE drives to show in XP. Something in the BIOS hiding them from XP maybe?
