Trouble with cd drives

I have a DVD/CD-ROM Drive and a CDRW Drive. They both have started to not recognizing that a disk in is the drives, unless I reboot the PC with the disk in the drive. After reboot they see disks and work fine as long as drive is not opened. I am using Win XP Home. The CD/RW drive works fine when you are using a disk writing program to write to the disk, even without rebooting but only in that program. If I open XP in safe mode both drives work as they should. Has anyone else had this problem and are there any suggestions for a fix?
 
Check your Jumpers. Also check the Bios/Device Manager to ensure they are not running on the same DMA.
 
I believe they are on different DMA Modes, the CDRW is showing Ultra DMA Mode 4 and DVD-ROM is showing Ultra DMA Mode 2. Jumpers should be correct as these drives have worked properly in past and I have not changed any jumpers.
 
when did this start? I mean did you do somthing then your drives stopping functioning properly?
 
I'm not really sure when this started, I upgraded to XP from Win 98 about middle of 2004, but if I remember correctly I already had this problem. I have struggled along with it for a while because I could get the drives to work if I rebooted with disk in them and couldn't find anyone who could help me with the problem. Now I have some programs I would like to install that have three to four disks. I saw this forum in my latest issue of PC-World and thought I would try it.
 
Not really sure if this might have something to do with it but have you run any checks for trojans? Seems like if I have a problem before I try a reformat and fresh install I like to run adaware, spybot, spysweeper, and giant antispyware. Running just one doesn't always find everything, but I have found after running all of them then you should be pretty much clean of most trojans or adware. Sounds like it is definitely software and not hardware though. If you can boot up in safe mode or dos and have complete access to your drives then after all else has failed just backup everything...uhh I guess you wont be burning your backups to cd / dvd though... :( but perhaps you have a second drive to backup files too. Anyhow fdisk, format, fresh install always helps for me. Good luck...
 
This is not an option at this time. Am now thinking about building new PC instead.
