Well I just built my first system and things went smoothly. However, I opened up CPU-Z and I noticed some things that seem really odd to me. My system consists of a C2D6600, Corsair DDR2 8500 (PC2-1066), Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R.

I haven't touched the BIOS at all.

In CPU-Z it says my cores are running at 1.86 GHz??? My RAM running at PC2-6400???
Task Manager says my CPU usage is at ~50%..I mean that shouldn't be right, should it? All I'm running are (2) IE windows and CPU-Z

Could someone please take a guess at whats my problem? These might be newbie issues, I dont know really, but thats what I am, so please help lol :)
 
At this point I would flash the BIOS, and update the chip-set drivers. Since this is a first time build I would open up the case and go back over all of the connections. make sure everything is seated right. Also try another CPU fan hook up in your motherboard if it has more than one.
 
I've gone over like 10 times and made sure everything is seated correctly. The fan I'm running on the CPU is the AC Freezer Pro 7 and temps that are reported in BIOS are in the 30's so thats fine.

What would flashing the BIOS do?
 
Your ram is running at 1066 (2x533).. As for the PC2-6400, CPUZ is just reading whats on the chip... I am not sure if anything faster then 800MHz is coded that way into the chip... As long as the system sees it as 533MHz which it does then it is running at 1066MHz.


I would check the bios settings and see if you can manualy set the CPU Multiplier.
Also I believe the ram divider would have to be set 1:2 (fsb:RAM MHZ) to get your ram to 1066. Being an AMD fellow I really couldnt navigate you in the bios... But I am sure someone here should...

As per your task manager... Seeing that you are running Vista... esp after boot up for a bit the system is ALWAYS doing something.. My Rig in the sig is always doing something...

Your CPU multiplier has to be a 9x not 7x to get the 2.4GHz on the CPU...

9(CPU Multiplier) x 266(FSB) = about 2.4GHz

266 x 4(fsb multiplier) = 1066MHz FSB

1:2 = 1066:533(x2 dual channel) = 1066:1066

Oh...would those changes require any changes with Voltages or anything? I don't really understand the voltage subject.

Your CPU is probably using speed step to down clock your CPU when idle.
 
Most likely noise and energy.

I believe this was why it's suggested to be running SuperPi or Orthos while getting CPU-Z results? So there'll be a decent load on the CPU.
 
speedstep should drop the multi to 6x though, not 7
so it might just be set wrong in the bios
