Trouble installing XP

Hey! I just built my new rig(see specs in sig) and it turned out great! I installed windows XP proand everything went fine. Then, I pushed my overclock too far and the system wouldn't post, so I cleared the CMOS and brought my overclock back down to 2.54ghz. Then, my hard drive partition was deleted somehow and I couldn't boot back into windows. I tried reinstalling windows, but after it copied the installation files to the hard drive, the system would not read the MBR after it rebooted the first time during the installation of windows(I checked to see if the finstallation files were there via knoppix). I have tried installing windows 7 times and windows won't continue installing after the first reboot.

Now when the system tries to boot from the hard drive, the following displays on the screen:
Error Loading Operating System
 
Sounds like you are still overclocked too high. Take it back down some more.

I'm at stock speeds(133X15 at 1.45v). I even brought it down to 500MHz, still with no luck. I installed windows at 2540mhz on that system before and it worked fine.

are you leaving the disk in after it installs everything before setup?

did you remormat? or install over the old OS?
 
I know it's a problem with the hard drive now, because I just installed XP on an old 13GB hard drive on that system. I might try copying the hard drive to my 80GB hard drive and use the FIXMBR and FIXBOOT commands in the recovey console so it will write the mbr to the 80GB hard drive.
 
The exact same thing has happened to me and I have yet to find a solution.

I installed WinXP on my hdd without problems and then pushed the oc too far. The computer wouldn't post and so I cleared the CMOS. Then, when it booted I got an Error Loading OS message just as you do. I've tried installing WinXP multiple times and though the files make it onto the drive, it refuses to boot windows. I've used the WinXP fixmbr and fixboot commands. I've zero filled the mbr and the entire drive several times. Still I get the same error message.

What is bizarre is that I can install WinXP to the drive and boot without problems when it's in another, older computer, but when I swap it back into my main rig, using power and ide cables that I know are good, it becomes unbootable again.

I don't know what the problem is. The only solution left to me at this point is to return it.

By the way, my drive is a Hitachi Deskstar model. It currently fails SMART recognition in the new comp (the older computer's mobo doesn't check for SMART).
 
I think I'm going to RMA the drive because I can't get it to work. How long does it usually take to RMA parts through newegg?

It took about 7 business days the one time I had to RMA something. You should use WD's advanced RMA option though. You fill out an RMA online and they will send you the new drive first. Once you get the new drive, you send the bad one in. They will put a hold against a credit card until they get the bad drive. It will save you an assload of time, because you'll get the new drive right away. Just make sure you send the bad one back within 30 days. ;)
