Moved to college put together an old machine just so I have something when I'm at home (like now).
Its running win98 and the other machine on the network is XP pro. My main box (replaced) is also XP pro. DSl -> Router -> Parents box / My box

The router is 192.168.3.1, parents is static DHCP to 192.168.3.2
The 98 box is saying (ipconfig) its on 192.168.2.22 but I dont have anything on 192.168.2.x
When I tell it to /release_all and /renew_all it finds some REALLY wacky address (that I cant remember off the top of my head) :(

Any ideas? Does that big block of text make sense?

169.x.x.x - It's what MS boxes default to if they are trying to get a DHCP address but can't.

Have you tried giving the Win98 box a static IP of something like 192.168.3.[4-10] (any number not used).

I think you mean a "static IP address." DHCP is for when the router hands out IP info to clients(dynamic IP). You can either give your new box a static IP like malk-a-mite suggests or you can go into the router configuration and verify that DHCP is enabled. If it is enabled then check the range it uses. I would set the range to begin at 192.168.2.10 and give it at least 5-50 addresses to hand out

no, actually I meant static DHCP. the router can be configured to hand the same IP to the MAC all the time. So yes, its a static IP, but the machine just knows its getting DHCP info.

Yes, I've tried telling the 98 box to just use static IP, it could never connect. Next time I am home I will try again (Im wondering what I had it set as...)
