Tri SLI surround issue

i've been using 2x gtx 580's SLI in surround for a few weeks with no major issues. i could easily play older games (TF2 and L4D2 to name a couple) at 4800x2560 with every setting completely maxed out including AA. i always leave vsync enabled so whenever i played these games i could see my fps at a constant 60 which is fine, that's how it should be since that's the refresh rate of my monitors. so today i installed a 3rd gtx 580 (exact same brand & model as the other 2), fired up L4D2 and noticed that the fps was stuck at 45 with vsync enabled. also, it seemed really glitchy with my previous settings. games that i could run with no issues in SLI with high AA settings would crash with those same settings in tri SLI. i turned down the AA settings to prevent the lockups/crashes but the fps would still not go over 45, as if that was the refresh rate of the monitors. i get the same results in multiple games that i've tried now. oh, and disabling vsync allows it to go over 45 of course, but why would having vsync enabled in tri SLI make it think the refresh rate is 45? for now i've went back to SLI and everything is back to normal but i really would like to figure out what the issue is with tri SLI.

also, when i disable surround in tri SLI, the fps goes back to 60 when vsync is enabled. so it's only an issue with the combination of surround and tri SLI. oh, forgot to mention, im using the 270.61 drivers.

The first thing is your cpu. If you are using the cpu in your sig it is no where near enough to drive 3 580's. Forget all the at that res you are gpu bound. Yes to a certain amount you are but you really really need a lot of gpu power to get three fermi working in certain games. My 920 @4 gig is a bottleneck for my 3 480's @ 800/1050. If i up the cpu frequency in most games I get a fps boost. The cpu just gets too hot so 4 it is.

From memory that motherboard is pretty old any need a bios update to play with those cards.

Last but not least welcome to nvidia's shit drivers for tri and surround. I have not even been able to play TF2 for months despite all the advice from valve. They just blame NV drivers..... Other games just run like crap. I am using 267.91 (I think) which is best for me in bc2 which I play almost exclusively. Any of the 270 driver are crap with surround and bc2. Screen off to the right and all over the place fps and gpu use. Even going from 2 - 3 cards has not made a huge difference here. I have overall lower gpu use but slightly higher fps but more importantly higher min. All this is basically due to my cpu not being upto powering 3 480's in surround.

ok, i understand that my cpu is a bottleneck. i plan to upgrade to P67 once a certain motherboard comes out. however, i still don't get why my fps is capped at 45 with tri sli and surround.

SLI, no surround, vsync enabled -> 60fps cap
SLI, w/ surround, vsync enabled -> 60fps cap
Tri SLI, no surround, vsync enabled -> 60fps cap
Tri SLI, w/ surround, vsync enabled -> 45fps cap
