Tri-Color LED's Announced!

Not exactly a new thing. RGB LEDs have been around ever since blue LEDs became available.
 
i think the main difference here is that they are surface mount leds and not the regular ones
 
I hate the way they use the word tricolor. It's really quite confusing. Technically tricolor leds have been around for many many years. A red/green led is tricolor since you have red, green, and yellow. Nothing spectacular about that. Throw a blue in there and you have an RGB led since you have seven colors(not three, as a tricolor would imply) right off the bat, plus whatever various levels are in between those colors. Perhaps the industry's nomenclature is simply shifting, but it will be quite confusing for a while. I'm still going to call them RGB leds, though.
 
They only put 3 colors on it thats why it's called tri-color. Those colors making a new color is just something that happens.

I understand why they call it tricolor, but tricolor leds have traditionally been leds that have two dies that can produce a total of three colors, so also calling an rgb led tricolor confuses things.
 
If it's an RGB led and it's focused properly then it has the potential to make every color imaginable just like any RGB device does by blending the levels of R-G-B together which for a case modder will offer unlimited choices in terms of color schemes for their cases and who knows, if the tech develops far enough we might even begin seeing full color active matrix led displays in the future.

You ever see those giant full-color LED panels they use for advertising in some places? They are a sight to behold and I wish I could get ahold of one. Large panels with thousands of LED's to form an image. Our mall has a ton of them and uses them for videos etc.

Nope, I've only seen the RG scrollers, but I'm talking more along the lines of display panels such as led based monitors, TV's and other things. Like I said it would take years of development but the end results could be thin panel displays that offer full viewability in daylight which foe mobile enviroments would be excellent.

Already getting there.... still a ways to go though. I love these things!
