Travelling with the computer

This might be a dumb question, but I am going to visit my family for a week or so (10 hour drive) and I need to bring my computer with me (don't have a laptop), and I was wondering if there was considered a proper (or improper) way to pack the computer in the car to prevent it from being damaged. One time I traveled with it and when I hooked it up again my hard drive had died, I couldn't even get Knoppix to read the drive. It may have been a completely fluke thing, but now I'm a little paranoid about taking it with me.

Try to minimlize any sort of rattling or shaking, and make sure that you have it a tight area where it can't move. So if you hit a bump, it won't be unsecured and go flying into something.

That said, you don't need to be unreasonable, cases do offer fine protection.
 
When I'd drive home from school (5 hours), I would put a pillow or two in the back seat of my car and rest the computer on that, and use the seat belt to make sure it didn't move.
 
I use the seat belt method. Just put it shotgun with you, and make the girlfriend ride in the back. If it rattles around a lot, you may have to re-seat your memory.
 
Don't have the original shipping box? That would be ideal. My comp fell out of the car once. Just had to reseat the video card. I suspect the hard drive was a coincidence.

I don't know why I didn't think about putting it in the original box, but I did thankfully..I put the monitor in its original box as well. During my trip, I had just stopped at a red light, and a kid behind me slammed into me. He was looking at his phone instead of the road and smashed my car up good. The car is totalled, but at least my computer is ok :)
