I travel back and forth between San Francisco and Texas two or three times a year and stay for some time. I'd like to be able to take my computer with me either onto the airplane with some careful packing (I usually don't bring much in way of clothing, pherhaps maybe a carry on) or just ship it. (<<scary) Im fixing to buy a computer case for this purpose and I'd like it to be aesthetically pleasing and have good airflow if that's not too much to ask.

Anyone have any special tricks or expertise on computer cases that might be advantageous for constant shipping or flying across the country? Thx in advance.

P.S. No I don't want a laptop! ;)
 
shuttle... small, easily moveable... you do have to buy there stuff but if your looking for portability in a desktop system its the only way you can go
 
Shuttle is all good and well but I already have a system all planned out. sli, dell 2405 etc. Don't really want to go the teeny tiny route. I mean more a clever way of carrying it or shipping it safely and/or a mid tower case with durability in mind.

edit: Besides, shuttle would want to sell me an intel and Im far too upity for that. I want my x2 and mobility, and the style of an antec or lian li. I'm going to end up just paying an exuberant amount for shipping every christmas and summer aren't I? :rolleyes:
 
you could use that packaging foam most companies use, place it inbetween all your components and fill it to the brim, should work ok in any case, i'd say a 1U rackmount too but you want an sli rig, maybe a 3U or 4U ?

another idea is to cut some hard metal into strips that you could screw on to support the case, maybe screw them onto or into the case sides or inbetween larger supported areas?

It's all in an alluminum suitcase I picked up at Harbor Freight for $19.99
That's an ATI 9800XT video card for size comparison. All I had to do to take it with me on trips, was to package up my 15" LCD in a seperate box and fill the empty spaces with bubble wrap.
 
Hah, I could only imagine what airport secruity would say about a briefcase full of wires and such.

If you're going to be moving your PC through an airport, be VERY wary of baggage handlers (speaking from personal experience here). Someone mentioned using foam :

BUT...

that didnt work so well for me. I used a ton of packing foam, styrofoam, and bubble wrap, etc when I took my Lian Li PC-7 Plus to QuakeCon this year. When I got home from Dallas and unpackaged my case, I had dents in BOTH side panels, scuffs all over the window (from rubbing), and both of my LEDs in the front (power and HDD) had fallen out (one no longer worked), despite the fact that they were securely clipped into place. I really wish I could have seen how the baggage handlers dealt with my case, the sheer violence of them throwing it around must have been astounding. There is NO way any of this would have happened if someone didn't throw it onto baggage belts, throw it into the plane, drop 1900 lbs of other luggage on it...

The disrespect these assholes showed my case was mind boggling. I even wrote all over the outside "VERY FRAGILE" in gigantic letters, but in this instance, that probably made them handle it even rougher.

Luckily I had removed my mobo, RAM, GPU, & processor and carried them in my carry on bag. Of course all the airlines have a "we're not responsible for damage, only for loss" policy. So this lets them beat the shit out of something you gave to them in pristine condition (I had gotten this Lian Li case 5 days earlier- it was in *perfect* shape) and not be responsible. Yet had I shipped the case via UPS or FedEx, and they damaged it like these jokers, they would be liable to compensate me for the damages.

A word to the wise, get the strongest, heaviest metal case you can find and get that thick, dense foam that you can cut to size and line the entire thing with it. Seal your PC in this. Go out onto your driveway and lift your case over your head. Drop it on the ground and jump up and down on it 7 or 8 times. Reopen the metal case and see what condition your PC is in. This will give you an inclination of what to expect from the airlines.

Thx a bunch bradyapba! Do you think I could replace that power supply and fit an sli system in that thing though? That psu they have in that thing sucks. I can't really tell from the pictures if it's standard size or not.
 
i know you can swap out the power supply, its standard. As for an SLI MOBO, i dont know, i dont have one yet :) But my guess is, maybe not, without some modification..


I also just saw here in the SMall Form Factor Forum, there is a LOT of Q-pack case questions and info, you might want to head over there.
 
You could build a case out of 1/2" steel, and just glue all the parts inside to bubble wrap rather than screw them in. But, Im sure the baggage handlers would find a way to dent something that thing, up. They would probably run the box over with those pusher trucks a few times.

Hmm. I have a real idea.

If I have things that I really actually care about, I always keep them in a small backpack and shove them behind my feet under the crappy airplain chairs.

Find out how small the space is under the chairs, and build/buy a case that fits under there. Or, just keep it there on your lap with you at all times.

You could put the case in the overhead bins, but the last time I was on a plane, people are always banging shit around up there and re-arranging things so they can shove in their load of crap.

Just dont let the case leave your hands.
 
If I were you I would get a well padded suit case, disassemble the computer, stowe it in the case so it's nice and safe (and the airport won't give you so much trouble), than just reassemble. Unless your taking your computer to a LAN or something, you really don't need a case. Hell, you can just buy 2 cases for like $15 each and than put your computer into it. It only takes, what, 10 minutes to put it back together? It's the safest way, in my opinion.

That's what I did. See my post above to find out what happened to my case's side panels after that.

bob said to keep it on your lap, the flight attendants will have a heart attack about that. They gave me shit for trying to hold my 20" Apple Cinema Display on my lap. Luckily since I had it in a GearGrip I put it under the seat in front of me face down, and it was fine (although my knees got really cramped trying to keep my feet from resting on it).

These assholes surely don't make it easy on you.
