Travel case for 23" LCD?

I occasionally go away for a couple of months at a time and I would like to take my 23" HP L2335 with me since I use my computer a lot for programming. However I am worried as hell about wrecking it in transport. I have an IDEQ 210 which are nice and small and you can get a travel case for those but what about something for a 23" LCD. Anyone here have any actual EXPERIENCE with this. I saw some really expensive travel cases which don't look like I could take them as carry on. Any suggestions?

The original box is pretty damn big, but I am thinking that is what I have to go with. I would have prefered something smaller so that I could bring it as carry on. I am a little worried about it going "missing" somewhere between hartford and Calgary. That is says HP 23" LCD monitor on the front of the box doesn't help very much either I did see some aluminum cases for $40 but they were only about 17" in width. I figure the box would need to be 24x20x6 to fit the monitor and foam padding, assuming I remove the base and put in in my luggage serpately.

Wile I can understand they might be expensive, they are not really that heavy, but they are well built and airline-approved.
