transporting sff in carryon

has anyone done this?


i'm heading to europe and considering that parts are more expensive there, i want to build a sff(first time) at home and take it in as a carry on


looking at dimensions most cases(i'm looking at microfly because it'll hopefully fit the 8800gtx) shouldnt be a problem in fitting into carryon space

but will the airport screens throw a fit? or has anyone had airlines send them back and put their sff in stored luggage?

any suggestions?

what i'm looking at

ultra microfly(is there anything smaller that would fit this stuff?)
wd-raptor 150gig
c2d - e6400
asus p5b-vm
2 gigs g.skill(the only thing i found on new egg that will actually work with the mobo)
evga 8800gtx
not sure about psu - needs to be modular and have shortcables though

i've got a monitor/input/dvdrw drive already

i was able to take my Qpack as a carryone. My airline was United Airline and they allowed me to take it onboard. It fits in the upper compartments
 
I took my Dell 20.1" and my Micro-Fly on and it fit in the overhead just fine. You can use the Sugo bag, which the MF fits perfectly in. If you have a connecting flight with a commuter plane, you'll have to request sitting in the back where you can fit your rig underneath the seat. Be prepared for a workout. Lugging both the monitor and rig get really heavy, especially going from one side of the terminal to the other. Be prepared for stares also as everyone will be looking at you like WTF!!
 
It's been a couple of years since I last travelled with my shuttle. Security made me take it out of my carryon and put it in a tray like a laptop, but that was all. It's best to put any electronic stuff in their own tray anyway to avoid extra hassles.

I wouldn't try getting one of those Killer NICs on board though... that could easily look like a weapon and get you a date with Mr Latex.

I haven't personally travelled with an SFF but I have a friend who goes to Colgate University in NY and he takes his Shuttle without any problems back and forth to TX.

My brother did that with his college computer. The only trouble he got was that he proved that it was a computer, so he set it up and let it boot.

What if it wasn't? What if it was really a bomb? At Atlanta, a bomb at security would be just as deadly as a bomb on a plane.

[sarcasm]Now you are just being silly. We all know that bombs only come in liquid form.[/sarcasm]

I don't see how it makes a difference whether you are carrying a laptop of an SFF. Usually they'll just wipe it down and be done with it.

That's been SOP for laptops since their introduction.

Of course, they really are bombs if you've got Sony laptop batteries. ;)
 
I know I didn't have to boot my laptop on a domestic flight from BWI, but they asked me about six times to match sure my camera was digital and not film, or video. I don't really see why this would make too much of a difference?

The only thing they made me do was take it out of my backpack and run it in its own tray. So surely they will let you take an SFF, as long as it meets the criteria for carry-on luggage.
