I am going to get a WD 160G SATA HDD next week. I am currently using a 40G IDE HDD that I am giving to a friend. The problem is, I want to transfer most if not all (except system and app) files to my new SATA drive after I reinstall Windows XP on it.

This is the plan I have so far, please tell me if I am going to do something real stupid.

I am first going to put SATA drivers on a floppy drive and then unhook my IDE harddrive. I will put the windows xp cd in the cd rom and reboot my computer with the option to boot off of a cd. The blue screen will come up and I will press F6 when it is time and install my drivers and then hopefully install WinXP.

At this point, once I have WinXP up and running, what can I do to transfer files from my old hard drive to this new one? Can I just plug in the old IDE hard drive as a slave and transfer everything with Cut & Paste?

Thank you very much for any and all info.

It wouldn't be a slave since it's on an IDE channel and the main HD is on SATA. Just plug it in like normal, boot comp, and transfer files. Only possible issue is make sure you don't have BIOS set to boot from the old IDE drive first.

thanks for the info.. I forgot about that, it does make sense to it that way...
