Transferring / Converting VHS to Digital Format?

I have some old home videos on VHS that I'd like to convert into a digital video format.

Other than bringing the VHS tapes to Walgreens and paying them to do it, can anyone who's done this walk me through the process and list what software and hardware I'd need?
 
Quickest and easiest way is to use a Sony DVD recorder.
We have the older version of this,

If you plan on editing the movies, then it is more involved, requiring an analog to digital transfer box, like a Pinnacle capture device,

I never used anything this cheap though so I don't have any first hand experience with the cheaper devices.

I use a Matrox RT.X2, but that is a $1300 editing card that uses Adobe Premiere Pro.
