Im planning on buying a new hard drive for my computer. I would like to be able to take the primary partition off my old hard drive and transfer it to my new one. I understand that I would have to configure the jumpers and IDE cable, etc. Im running windows xp (if that means anything). I have partition magic, though I never used it, could this tool be used to transfer that partition onto another hard drive?

Most new hard drives these days will include a tools CD that allow you to transfer your old HDD to the new one, so that's option A. Option B is Partition Magic as yes, it has a "Copy Partition" option.

thanks man. I just opened partition magic and saw the Move option, so that helps. Im planning on buying a seagate as an additional HDD. My old one is a Seagate SATA, and its just making a lot of grinding noise, and its only 80gb *55 is left*. Im hoping Seagate does offer the disk to transfer the partition. If so, then that would be great. Anyway, thanks for your reply.

Option C is using a GParted LiveCD
Option D would be the ``dd'' command with a Linux Live Distro.

Options C and D do not have any cost associated with them, other than the bandwidth to download the image and the empty CD/ DVD. Maybe some of your time.

Neither do A and B, since A comes with the drive and OP already owns B. GParted would be a good option if OP didn't already own PM, but IMO Knoppix et. al. won't be easy for the average user unless they've had at least a basic initiation to Linux.

I just need an upgrade, till I get a new PC. i got a sony vaio rz22g (about 4 years old). 2.4 ghz, 512 ram*upgrading to 1gb* Nvidia GeForce 6200 (was a Mx 440). I figure if i put a few hundred bucks into it i can get it to run a bit better. Considering i dont have thousands to buy or build a new comp right now.
