My old comp has an old fireball 20gb harddrive but is fcked and gives some windows error that cant be fixed(forgot what it was, havent booted that comp up in a while) but i remember i can get into windows only through safe mode. Can i attach that ide cable to my new comp and get the files off it and transfer to my hardrive before i reformat that harddrive?

cant remember if i have specs in sig so here is my new comp:

amd 3600 brisbane @ 2.7
1gb gskill ddr2 800
biostar tforce 550se
seagate 80gb sata2
evga 7600gt

i was thinking i could disconnect my dvd burner/drive and use that ide channel for that old harddrive, as thats the only ide port on my mobo.

old harddrive is formatted with HP win98se

You should be able to do that without a problem. You may need to convert the old hard drive to NTFS first, however.

not sure about vista since i havent used it, but with windows 2000 and xp, u should be able to plug it in and use it, with fat32 file system which is the most likely used file system on win 98

According to MS, you can convert FAT32 to NTFS via a command.

This should work.

will i need to convert it just to transfer some files over?

thanks guys for your help ill give this a try tomorow

Probably not. I have read from and written to FAT32 partitions with WinXP, XP SP2 and Vista (as well as linux) without a problem.

edit: In fact I'd recommend against doing anything but copying the data off the drive, if you are concerned about it failing.
