Label found attached to a Memorex optical mouse cord:

WARNING

Handling the cord on this product will expose you to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause [cancer, and] birth defects or other reproductive harm.

There's a new initiative in the hardware world; it's called either "lead free" or RoHS (EU name - we pronounce it "Row--hass"). Basically this specifies that anything with more than a certain ppm of lead must be either (1) not used, or (2) labeled as such. That's why your cord has the label on it.

You may wonder how the hell you solder something without lead. Trust me, most of the hardware world is wondering the exact same thing.....:eek: There are new processes being evaluated and the "rubber hits the road" big time over the next two years....

See? When you mom told you "....don't put things in your mouth..." she got it right.....:D

My Saitek joystick has the same warning. Its just there because in Cali they are anal about the amount of lead in products, the same items sold anywhere but the US don't have those labels. Nothing to worry about really, unless you decide to chew on the cord 24/7 for the next 50 years there should be no problem.
 
I can't really understand why they would sell something like that in the first place. :confused: Looks like they're just asking for something bad to happen. :p

Keep in mind that to my understanding, the only thing that's changed is the rules on how much lead you can use in products; these practices / materials have been around for a long time. The state of CA is a little ahead of the curve when it comes to their Pb restrictions.

Metallic conductive glue has a poorer signal quallity than a good old solder. They may start using different metals and just heating them up more. Thats my guess. Bismuth anyone?
 
So I guess all you people in other states then cali can suck on your mouse cords all the time.. Even though that might look odd.. Bending down over your keyboard trying to play a game while suckin on your mouse cord... Oddly enough, I bet many of you have tried that. :p
 
Well there is something called lead free solder. Also lead free solder has been around for years it isnt prefered since lead is one of the most abundant cheapest metals on earth and switching it with anything else raises the cost...
 
I wondered the same thing when I got my Saitek P3000 but yeah as others have said the cords have been the same for ages it's just now that they're putting labels on them, I guess we have the same/similar regulations here in Canada as well.

...good guess. Several different versions of the chemistry are pretty much working out, but the high temperatures required are really playing hell with the components and circuit boards. Take plastic LED's, for example.... And, re-working boards in the lab becomes a much bigger challenge..

I'm sure it'll all get figured out, but there is some work remaining to be done.....
