Touchpad with touchscreen characteristics?

Is there software available that would allow me to use a touchpad in a similar fashion to a touchscreen on a tablet? (Ie, when I lift a finger or stylus off the pad and place it somewhere else, the pointer also jumps to that position)

It would make drawing diagrams and notetaking a big easier without the expense of a tablet.

But can an ordinary touchpad be made into one? It seems like the hardware is there. Has anyone made software for it?

You want to use a 1.5 - 2" square to accurately control a pointer on a high res display?
I dont think touchpads have that many position receptors.

"There are several variations on the design of a touchpad, but the basic principle in all of them is the same. The touchpad has two layers of material. One layer responds to vertical movement while the other responds to horizontal movement. Different designs use wire-sensor grids, semi-conductive gel, electrodes or even tiny springs. In all cases, the pad tracks the movement of a finger and translates it to the movement of the mouse. Some models respond to tapping to simulate clicking the mouse button or allow people to scroll through documents by moving their finger along one vertical edge."

That's the closest thing to what I wanted, it's very limted but it works.

Thanks
