Touch up this photo, remove the background, make a wallpaper?

I had this over in the Digital Artwork forum but meant for it to go here. Things seem slow in both places, but hopefully someone can work some magic for me.

Here's the original pic, it's cropped and sized to about 1280*1024. I'd like to make it my desktop wallpaper.



I'd like the background removed and just the body and starting block visible on a black background, I guess. And the brightness, contrast, hue, whatever adjusted, maybe add a little tan, haha. Like this, only better than my sweet Paint hack job:

I use Gimp2.2 and I can't figure it out.
If this damn program were easier to use I could help.
