I have a toshiba m205 thats having issues. On boot the screen displays an error before the logo even appears. Then the boot logo appears corrupted and then it asks for a bios password while the screen is actually displaying "P\ w rdP= _w rd" in the top left. Anything typed appears as an asterisk, but its copied several spaces over. While displaying that there are horizontal lines flashing up and down the screen. If I hit enter it beeps and the lines clear up for a second, then goes back to what it was showing before.

Im sure something is dead or corrupted, but whats the most likely culprit? I pulled it apart and disconnected the cmos battery for a bit, didn't clear anything up. Beyond that Im not sure.
 
2 possibilities, ram or motherboard. Try throwing some test ram in it if you can and see if that clears up the video corruption.

I'm leaning towards motherboard. These have an issue with bioses randomly setting a password (I assume one wasn't set previously). Then you simply have some video issues going on as well.
 
so how do I get around the bios password then, if it is the RAM?
 
I deal with these Toshiba bios password alot. Its a easy fix if you know how to solder, or knows someone that does.

Remove the battery/AC power, then remove the RAM and the sticker underneath it. Look for JOPEN on the motherboard; it should be located around the RAM area. What you need to do is short out JOPEN, and insert the battery and power it back up. The screen should be blank, this is normal. Wait for about 30 second and power it down and remove the battery. After that you need to desolder the short on JOPEN that you created. Reassemble everything and the bios should be reset as well as the password.
 
ok, so I said screw it, bought a new motherboard on ebay.
Put it in (PITA) and have a new problem. The screen is cleaned up, but now its almost gibberish. I get mostly words, but with symbols and random text thrown in as well. example, (after pulling the cmos battery for a few minutes)

Press [F1U ceq to set Date/Tiee&

Pressing F1 takes it to the bios setup but its even worse.
Any Ideas? Id try swapping the bios chips but i cant find the things.

Had to do this on a friends laptop once. It works like a charm. Just e sure to update the BIOS as soon as you get back into windows.
