AMD has just announced that it will provide processors to Toshiba for use in its laptop PCs, ending Intel’s exclusive deal with the company.

AMD will start providing microprocessors to Toshiba, ending the Japanese electronics maker's exclusive ties with Intel, Toshiba said on Tuesday. Most other global PC makers, including HP, Dell, and Acer are already procuring microprocessors from AMD as well as from Intel, AMD's far larger rival with a market share of around 80%.

AMD already has limited production capabilities so how are they gonna supply even more to another company? AMD is selling more chips to people than it can handle which in some ways is a good thing but in others can possibly hurt them.

I, for one, think it's good to see AMD biting a proverbial chunk out of the Intel dinosaur. :) Intel has such a monopoly on consumer prebuilt systems, it's not even funny.

I'm glad AMD is finally winning some people over in the notebook segment. I received a "Congratulations Graduate... now buy our stuff!" catalog in the mail from HP the other day, and it was exclusively AMD notebooks. Notebooks are an ever-increasing market as technology expands and more and more people realize that mobile is the way to go, and I think that getting a decent share in that market is the best way to ensure the future competitiveness (competitivity? :p ) of your company.

Mobile is the way to go for people who need mobility. ;)

Consumers won't be the only ones to suffer if AMD's competitive efforts falter. It's nice to know that the business world cares about AMD as well.

why would you want an amd chip at all right now, especially in a notebook?

Cheaper, Incredibly cheaper.

Only because of Core 2. Before then AMD was priced even higher than Intel because AMD thought they had themselves firmly planted in the industry and could act like Intel. It backfired on them so they are almost back to square one.

You know that even though AMD processors are less expensive than their Intel counterparts it has definitely been proven that in the notebook segment they (AMD) are woefully underpowered and if you are going to spend upwards of $400 for a portable computer don't you think that it should at least be able to handle basic games and applications such as MS Office and Outlook?

I think that Toshiba is making a HUGE mistake because even though they may benefit in the short term the long run will be less favorable.

Stupid me, thinking that my old P3 could handle Office and Outlook. :(

:p

I own an Everex x5000xt laptop with an AMD Turion at 1.6ghz per core.
2GB ddr2
Geforce 7600 Go

I play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on it and it looks great. Of course, it doesn't look as good as when I play on my desktop with a 7900GTX, but it's a laptop.
Perhaps the game would run a little better on a Core2, but a comparable Core2 laptop with a geforce 7600 go costs ~$1200. I paid $700.

$500 difference? hello?!
try finding a laptop with a decent graphics chip and tell me how cheap you can find.
I think the sacrifice to buy the laptop with the Turion is well worth the $500 saved.
