Torrent downloading

Long time reader, first time poster.

I just recently moved into an apartment with a friend of mine from high school. He has an obsession with downloading torrents all day and night. I could care less if he does it at night but it has gotten to the point where he is using up so much bandwidth that surfing the internet is becoming a pain. Let alone trying to play a game.

What i am wondering is do you guys know a way i could block him from downloading torrents. I have a linksys WRT54GS with the newest firmware on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated and i have already tried talking to him about this and he just hasn't stopped.

You will either need a programmable router that you can throttle on a per port basis - he also mustnt have access to it.
Or you can throttle his bandwidth by getting him to allow you to install some throttling software.
Its probable his torrent client can be throttled instead, many of them are able to set the maximum speed they can download.

If you stop him downloading torrents you can bet you will lose a friend and it wont be good to live at your house so best to persuade him to be fairly throttled.

Give him 50% of the max, and do the same for your PC unless you are paying for the whole internet service, in which case leave yours at 100%.
Thats fair given the situation in my book.
 
If he's using utorrent it even has a time function where you can limit it during specific times and a web interface so that you can access it via the web. This would be good if you leave it unlocked after midnight but come home drunk and need max speed yourself to email some old girlfriend. You could just use the web interface to limit it while you email her. I'm suer somee of the other clients will have this, this is only what I'm familiar with.

Your router may also be able to load DDWRT which I believe has QOS settings.
 
Either pick up a buffalo router and flash it with DDWRT to manage his connection or speak with him and have him DL utorrent to set priority times for downloading.
 
If you can't get him to cooperate then you would need a router that can do QoS that would allow him to get all the bandwith he wants but when you want to browse or play a game the QoS will kick in and throttle torrent bandwith

Wow, that misconception is still floating around? Neither XP SP2 nor Vista limit you to 10 connections. They limit outgoing half-open connections to 10. As soon as connection timesout or connects fully then another slot is opened up to make another connection attempt. I just finished a WoW download through a torrent and had 56 active connections for the download. I'm using Vista HP and it's unhacked.
 
It's probably upload thats killing your connection. Try limiting your global upload (for torrents) to 10KBps.

As a side note for torrents "download speed is proportional to upload speed" is largely a myth in practice. Torrents usually go as fast if not faster when upload is capped around 10KBps.
