Tornado Before & After Using Google Street View

Time to change the shape of houses to something that can take 200 mph winds.
Its not about shape, its about build quality and design.

My house for example is actually rated for 200mph winds. Each stud is attached at the bottom and top using a large Y-piece of steel reinforcement. Similar reinforcement on the roof, and each roof tile is hammered in by hand which helps achieve the 200mph rating. Polyfoam is also very strong. It really doesn't add much cost to the home, but those are simple corners that many builders simply cut because its not something you can see and most people don't care to pay a few grand extra to know their house can withstand high winds because... well... what are the chances, right?

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean you're protected from debris though, so if the neighbors car goes flying into your house... well, sucks to be you.

Sad day. Messed up that they got rough storms today too. I have a great aunt out there helping collect the hospital medical records. Apparently the storm scattered all the medical transcripts for the hospital over a 3 block+ radius (assuming they fell down at all..). The rain today probably wiped out any hope of finishing that or finding anyone else alive. Supposedly there's still upwards of 1500 people still unaccounted for so this could get far worse.

What has changed to make the storms like this?

Is next year going to be even worse?

I wish thats all it was, was just wind.

But it's not the wind that causes the damage, it's the crap the tornado picks up and flings around.

These storms are very concerning yes, but living in the midwest you almost expect this to happen, it's just when and where it does.

Those poor folks.

Morgan Freeman said in Shawshank Redemption that "May is one damn fine month". I used to think that was so.

What a terrible spring it's been. At least we have hurricane season to look forward to soon...:(

We have everything under control here in Missouri.

thats good to hear, from the initial comments it seemed nobody was responding but reading further it seems the response has been quite good

Tornadoes can do some major damage.

We had a few tornadoes come through the Minneapolis and the surrounding metro area Sunday as well but nothing to the extent of Joplin. I live about 10 miles from where the tornadoes hit. We get sirens that go off for tornado warnings. I should probably take those a little more serious. I'm sure I'm not the only one, but when the sirens go off, I kind of shrug it off as a 'we'll never get a tornado here' kind of thing but it can really happen anywhere anytime. We're supposed to be in the basement or lowest levels for cover when those go off.

Yikes. That reminds me of the before and after pics we saw due to Japan's earthquake 2.5 months ago. :(

That's some serious destruction. I think I will deal with earthquakes and volcanoes on the west coast instead of tornado country. :(
