can anyone tell me how quiet and how good a tornado cools @ 5v vs 7v??? will it even run at 5v?

Not to be a dick but I am just curious as to why people buy a tornado and then 5v or 7v it. If you are going to do that why not just buy a non tornado fan or do you just want to say "I have a tornado?"

we buy it for the heatsink when we overclock... :) seems to be the best fan for heatsinks... i dont know y other people buy it... besides, when i crank the fan up, i will be wearing headphones... the only reason to set it at 5v or 7v for noise when i idle the comp... as for my fan right now... its on full blast... thats y im trying to see if any thinks i should put it at 5v or 7v...

i always used 92mm Panaflo L1A or papst fans for my cpu heatsinks. i never keep stock fans. I dont think ive ever seen a stock fan in anything that ive just accepted and left it be.

some fans wont start spinning at 5volts. so just check to make sure yours does. also i wouldnt suggest dropping to 5volts on an 80mm fan. your airflow will suffer too much. with a 92mm it shouldnt be such a big deal.

7volts works in almost any situation though. ive never seen a fan not start up at that, and its noticably more quiet. also i wouldnt ever 7volt any fan thats smaller than 80mm. just cause the smaller fans barely push any air to begin with. cutting them down in speed makes it basically nill. you might as well just put a good passive sink on it rather than 7volting a fan smaller than 80mm on a crappy small heatsink.

i was thinking about getting a thermalright ALX-800 or SLK-800a... 80mm tornado @ 7v should be fine?

My tornado works fine at 5V, 7V, 12V and on a rheostat.

(Question answered, no bickering or snide remarks. See how easy that is, folks?)

a 7volted tornado would push more air most normal sized 80mm fans at 12v and with about the same or less noise. thats why.

I would be leary of running the Tornado @ 5V, simply b/c it's, in reality, a Sunon fan (Vantec rebadges them... ;) ). Sunon fans are known to not be happy @ 5V and sometimes won't spin up. Idk about this particular model running @ 5V, but I have heard the Sunon problem mentioned often. I used to run the Sunon version of the Tornado w/ an AX-7 and the noise convinced me to move to water cooling. I never tried to run it @ a lower voltage though. BTW, the Sunon version of the Tornado can be had here:

It's a bit cheaper than the Vantec.

LMAO, im the same way i had 4 tornado's in a midtower on a fanbus, and with all on low it was tolerable. i really wouldnt run one without a fanbus, and the vantec/nexus bus is designed for the power. but im still happier with watercooled;)
