ST20G5 and SN25P. Both excellent platforms. I'm going SFF soon, and I can't make up my mind between the two. Any thoughts/recommendations?


Here's the basics of what I'm planning:
Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego
Radeon X800XL
Gig of Corsair XMS
Probably a single hard drive, single optical drive
 
While I have no idea what CPU that is (upcoming?), for me the answer is simple: SN25P (or actually, SN26P), partially because nvidia is the way to go for AMD chipsets, and partially the P chassis is superior to the G5 in just about every way (some people complain about aesthetics, meh).
 
Yeah...aesthetics. I don't particularly care for the SN25P's look, but that is of secondary concern.

Yes, the 3700+ San Diego core isn't out yet.


Also, what is this SN26P you refer to?
 
The P chassis really isn't much superior to the G chassis at all. The cooling isn't much better, just different. Yes it has more space, and a larger PSU, but the PSU in the G series is more than sufficient for anything you can stuff into the chassis.

Also the ATi chipset is not bad at all, pretty much as good as the nForce4, so that isn't much of a concern either.
 
The SN26P is the same as the 25, just with the NF4U SLI chipset and 2x16xPCIe. Supposed to be able to put two 6800GTs (max) in SLI. I want it for the improved firewall, support for SATA optical drives, and better performance (tighter available timings). I really wish Shuttle had rectified the above 3 issues with the first one, just a simple chipset change- but hey, they have their reasons, and I'm saving.
 
The ST20G5 does have 1 PCIe 16x AND a normal PCI slot. Dang shuttle for not doing the same in the nForce4 one!
 
well the st20g5 has some serious problems with it

the chipset makes the usb and ethernet things very processor dependent so it uses a lot of cpu to run usb things. also the USB ports are getting reported to have bandwidth issues (stuff freezes when lots of bandwidth is being used (i.e. anything other than a mouse/keyboard really))
 
P chassis are much nicer in person on Your table as on pics.

G5 chasis cooling is good , but P chassis cooling is complitly different and superior by far.
Orientation of grafic card is much better and allows using of a Silencer.
Also HDD cooling is realy cooling. Gachassis ahs problem with cooling of a grafic card and hdd.


Though I doo not mind having G5 chassis.
I agree if AMD CPU is used I would go only with nForce or VIA.
So if You want G5 chassis (looks good smaller etc.) good option (and very stable option) is a SN95G5.

No it does not, that problem effected only early review and OEm sampels of the ATi chipset, i myself have owned an MSi RS480M2 and use a USB printer, mouse, KB, camera, and thumb drive all at once, and my 3000+ i had in it did not become effected at all.
 
sn95g5 good choice but is AGP. I have one and love it. 3500+ and 6600GT. Great box. The P5 looks nice, Ive seen it in person :D nice and roomy and runs with PCI-E plus extra power. Reviews of both on [H] for you too see. What is this double PCI-E you speak of?? do you have a link to it??? this new ATI product look interesting, but is new from that standpoint and I dont really have any experience with th eATI chipset at all.
 
I just managed to sell my SN85G4, and I'm upgrading to a SN95G5. I would have gone to a PCI-E shuttle, but I want to make the jump to PCI-E when a SLI capable shuttle becomes available which should be sometime in May when it is announced, and go SLI just in time for Quakecon. SLI in a SFF is gunna be sweet!
 
My choice was 6800GT and that is AGP chip so I took SN95G5. It kicks ass.
Second SN95G5 I've build for someone was with 6600 GT and thats native PCI -e GPU and still it kicks ass.

All ATi chipset Pc's I've seen where totlay shity. Or drivers or preformance or unstability or USB problems.
Disregarding was it Compaq Laaptop with XP and Ati chipset or ASUS PunditR PIV with ATi chipset or noname mobo all of them have had problems.

For AMD CPU I goo with nForce or VIA chipsets and for Intel CPU's only with Intel chipsets.
