Your daily dose of drama is brought to you by this developing story about a Tor employee stepping down after a controversy over sexual assault allegations. What makes this story of interest is the statement given by Tor saying that the company has been aware of the allegations for some time.

We are deeply troubled by these accounts. We do not know exactly what happened here. We don't have all the facts, and we are undertaking several actions to determine them as best as possible. We're also not an investigatory body, and we are uncomfortable making judgments about people's private behaviors. That said, after we talked with some of the complainants, and after extensive internal deliberation and discussion, Jacob stepped down from his position as an employee of The Tor Project.

Doesn't surprise me. Higher ups tend to protect workers that they think are doing a good job, until they can't hide it anymore. Our GM had 2 valid sexual harassment complaints against him in the first few months of employment. In his case, he wasn't fired for 5 valid harassment complaints in 3 years, failing the mandatory counseling, misuse of public funds and vehicles, generally not working during company business hours, actively denying non-white employees hiring opportunities, or having constant poor performance reviews: he got canned for failing to (illegally) suppress our unionization.

So far no actual facts have presented themselves, most especially not from any persons (male or female) that are making claims that they themselves were abused or assaulted by Applebaum. So far this looks like pretty much what I expect it will turn out to be: nothing but a smear campaign writ large by a single person (or two) posting on Twitter/etc targeting someone that's in a position to be targeted just because they can do it.

Nothing to see here, moving on...

Don't worry guys, it's not like he's going to get arrested:

And, like Brock Turner, he's a rich white guy, so even if he does somehow reach the sentencing phase, he'll get less time than a minority gets for smoking weed.

Jacob Applebaum, rich? Since when? He lives out of hotel rooms paid for by most of the conferences and seminars he does, lives out of his backpack basically, cash only in almost every situation, etc. He's very upfront about the fact that he's always preferred a rather "nomadic" lifestyle never setting down solid roots anywhere for the majority of his lifetime.

Guess I need to double check the stats and make sure we're all talking about the same Jacob Applebaum, who knows. ;)
