Topower = Tagen = OCZ

Tagan and ocz power supplies can be found in the usa, haven't really seen anybody carry topower. Would be interesting to see how much they'd cost if they were available. The tagan's are priced reasonably enough though imho.
 
It was just an informational post I like to know what a PSUs family tree is...

The connection between Tagan and Topower is what I find most interesting, Tagan has a good rep but I have not seen any real proof... the following may raise some questions.

well take those with a grain of salt
1. thats quite an old rig
2. those samples are at 5 seconds
3. the regulation is still in spec and limited to startup spinup of the drives
4. those arent ATX12V v2.0 PSUs and are quite old, suitable for the rigs they where powering, but yes the instability during startup isnt nearly as good as the Antecs or PCP&Cs, but outside of those 2, thats a prettty median graph

on the other hand, Topower, OCZ and Tagan are still producing single +12V rail PSUs
that are simply ATX12V compatible not compliant, if unduely loaded that spinup instability could effect various VRM schemes (especially with alot of drives)

those are logged Digital Multimeter readouts off a Sanwa PC510 (0.08% accuracy) via RS232C or USB port to PC Link the logging software you see there

the test system is a Tyan Tiger 133 (S1834D).w\ Dual P3 650s overclocked to 865MHz (I think )
Dual sticks of 128MB PC133, a Matrox G400SH, Xwave 6000 sound card, NIC and a single HDD, FDD and CDROM
measured from startup, booting into Windows 2000, and Running 3DMark 2000 to conclusion, measured in 5 second intervals, which is definately less than ideal, but the best he could manage

Inside the Expansive original PSU FAQ, there is a bit of a section about that, although i'm up for re-doing that with more UL info tracking and stuff of that sort.

Indeed, Im afraid my "Whos Who in PSU" in the FAQ needs a bit of updating too
(but does have Vantec, OCZ, and Tagan under Topower)
but it with Vertigo's list (next page) would generally let you track down the "manufacturers"

but keep this in mind, most PSUs are assembled in "Job Shop" factories in China
these arent facilities fully dedicated to a given manufacturer, you wont find an "Antec" factory (actually that would be a Channel Well Technology Factory) :p
Some of them might not even be making PSUs full time, assembling other components as well

The "manufacturers" are basicaly corporate companies, marketing, accounting, engineering, purchasing,
If you "visit" a PSU manufacturer, it will be in a Skyscraper somewhere
then they shop the actual assembly, shipping assorted components to the "job shop" factory and pay for the assembly and testing\breakin, and possibly packaging

they also broker this whole process and sell to rebranders
often with "custom" components or feature build, so equating a "Brand" or "Manufacturer" with a specific level of quality only holds water part of the time
best to assess the quality on a model and some times series basis

Yes all good information which I was already aware of, but in case I wasn't I agree it needs repeating. My main interest is in the rebadge relationships most "PSU companies" spec their own components (for assembly by manufacturers), but a rebadge is in most cases just that.

It would be best to assess the quality on an individual unit basis as always YMMV but at that point it's anyones guess.

I think we can do better than this if we pay attention over time which is why I posted to beguin with, won't bother next time.

maybe I'll revisit it once Ive got a few other projects out of the way
(Watts dont mean Jack, Paranoia 101, Commandline, ect)
employing as Vertigo pointed out the UL info tracking
which has served quite well with several mystery PSU

that is afterall a list I compiled over a year and a half ago
with only haphazard updates to it

It's still bettter than anything else I've seen, my point is simply that over time with very little individual effort it can be improved.
 
Tagens are awsome. But stay away from everything else E-Power puts out. But the Tagens are super steady and super quiet.
