Ok to sum it up...I'm a tech for a living, and want to make a post about an angry customer. What would be the appropriate forum to place that under?

It's basically an OS reload that a customer does not want to happen....

Well, if it's about an Operating System, it should go under Operating Systems. I'm not really sure if you're trying to look for an answer or comlaint about a customer.

All I can say is that complaints are considered off topic in the forums and belong somewhere like GenMay.

A general OS question would go in the operating systems forum. Found here: http://www.hardforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=16

What I'm looking for is opinions of how I or the customer could've handled this situation differently....

In this case, since you actually want constructive answers, and since it's OS related, I would say it is fine to post it in the Operating Systems section so that the OS experts can take a look at it, and you'd also get feedback on dealing with customers.

Genmay is not where to go for constructive feedback. :D

If you are looking for suggestions dealing with any part of the OS, take it to the Operating System forum. If it is not appropriate for that forum, the moderator will let you know ;)

So does that mean it's an OS question as long as it's worded well and subscription to General Mayhem only if it's worded poorly?

I don't think it's a matter of wording so much as it is appropriateness. In other words, if it's an actual OS related question, then it's appropriate. If it's just complaining about a customer, then it would be more suited to genmay.

Ok how bout I post it here and the mods move it where they feel necessary

Ok let's change this person's last name to Doe. Let's call the store store

Mr. Doe drops off his computer at store. He says his computer will not go online. His computer is running Windows 98 SE

Later on that day...

I take a look at things, and decide I'd run winsockfix. That doesn't fix the problem, so I clear the internet cache to see if that will offer a solution. That happens to not fix the problem. So I boot the computer into safe mode and start to run scans. Now I get nothing but explorer errors, and various other software related issues. I discuss this situation with my higher up, and he agrees that we should put a clean copy of windows 98 SE on his computer.

Phone call to customer:

Me: Hello this is Ryan from store, how are you doing today?
Doe: Fine, so what's the damage
Me: I'm afraid I have some bad news
Doe: Alright.....
Me: Sir I had a chance to diagnose your pc
Doe: And....
Me: Well we've tried everything we can do at this point without reloading the computer, which leads me to my next question, is there anything you would like for us to backup?
Doe: Yes, I would like you to backup my (files)
Me: Alright sir, I have (files) is there anything else you would like for us to back up for you?
Doe: That'll do it
Me: Alright, sir I'm going to need you to come in and sign a form authorizing us to reload your computer.
Doe: Can you fax it to me?
Me: Unfortunatley we do not have a fax machine at this store
Doe: So that means I have to drive all the way up there?
Me: Unfortunatley yes, sir
Doe: THAT'S BULLSHIT
Me: Sir if you do not come up here and sign this form the only option I have is to put your computer back together, release it to you, and just charge you a diagnostic fee
Doe: I don't appreciate your attitude, what's your name?
Me: Ryan
Doe: I would like to talk to one of your supervisors
Me: Alright, but I'm telling you the exact same thing they told me....Here's the number *******
Doe: Alright I'm calling them right now
Me: I apologize for the inconvience
Doe: Click...

Now everyone at the company says I handled this situation wrong, but they have yet to tell me what I did wrong. Now everyone outside of the company said I could not have handled this situation any better...I almost got fired over this...Any thoughts?

Solution: Find a place work that will buy you a $57 fax machine. I have to agree with the guy, that is bullshit. Little else you could do though if those are the resources you have been left with. Tell your boss about efax.com....next.
