Saw this and it got me thinking. I'd have to say my top three are tough to choose. My top 5 would look something like this though (in no particular order):

MechWarrior2
Quake 2
Counter-Strike
StarCraft
Baldur's Gate

Honorable mentions go to Shogo: M.A.D., Shadow Warrior, & Duke Nukem.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is also on top of my list because of the atmosphere it has. Also Legacy of Kain series was badass too back when. Wish they still made those types of games. :(
 
Modern 3d era games:

-KOTOR (1 & 2, I see them as a package even if they were developed by different companies)

-Morrowind

-GTA: San Andreas(Nothing monumental about this game but I think it's the best example of a fun, over the top sandbox style game which is something I enjoy. An argument could be made for Just Cause 2 in this spot but I find it more generic and repetitive.)

Old School games:

-Most Sierra game from the EGA/CGA/VGA era(I couldn't pick just one or two)

-Nethack

-Legend of The Red Dragon & Trade Wars(tie for best BBS game)

-Wolfenstein 3d(software 3d FTW)

I considered listing The Witcher but I would want to wait another year or two to see if it stands the test of time before adding it to a "best of" list.
 
Over the years I have made this list several times. I am sure if you went back over them the lists would all be different, lol! But the same few games would cycle in and out. For today my top 3 PC games:

amen brother...system shock ONE was the most innovative game of its time..it still doesn't get the credit it deserves..one of the few games i have finished to the very end too..that says alot right there..best pc game ever made imho..i can still remember some of the levels..now thats immersion! lol

like many others, I really do miss looking glass. They made so many great memorable games for me.

I really liked Terra Nova (minus the FMVs) a lot.

I miss old monolith also when they made excited, well polished and unique games.

Both system shocks created an immersion level unheard of in games. Have to to put WoW 3rd, such a masterpiece in its heyday. Don't none of you go all elite and act like you didn't yell madly at the top of your lungs first time you downed Onyxia or Ragnoras :)

Not only I've spend lots and lots of hours on these games, but there's just something in these games that makes me enjoy them until today. Never gets old.

Very true about Parasite Eve 2. So much atmosphere in that game that I still to this day play it thru once a year. One of the first games to totally engross me in its atmosphere and make it feel like I was actually there.

Too many to choose from...Three off the top of my head:

Quest for Glory: So You Want To Be A Hero - best adventure game ever
Mechwarrior 2 - nothing like it before or since
QWTF - took up 2 years of my life

Special honorable mention to pre-expansion Everquest. Only MMO I've played that was fun from level 1-50. It didn't matter if I was stuck on level 36 for two weeks while fighting my way to Castle Mistmoore's gates...it was a great time.
