hey guys I am trying to back a secondary drive thats a boot drive for another PC, I use Acronis for a compressed backup but would like to just do a straight copy and paste of the drive so I have access to the files. I have been trying for the past hour changing ownership, permissions etc., nothing has worked so far.

Is this boot drive attached as a slave drive to another machine, or are you doing this after booting to the drive you're trying to adjust permissions on?

its a slave drive, a 2.5" IDE drive, with a ide to usb adaptor, connected to my sig rig. I have no problems looking at the files, opening the files, just deleting and copying/moving

you can't just "remove" permissions. No permissions = no access.
you would have to, most likely, take ownership, then modify perms as needed.

only "tool" you need is all built in to Windows.

alternatively, you could try SetACL. Although I have no experience with it, but have heard and read quite a bit about it.

I might be better off just booting a Linux live CD and transferring stuff over. I did it this way with my dads pc when it broke down. was just hoping for a faster way under Windows
