Is running dual 20" monitors too much?

I found them and they are awesome quality and hooked them up, but damn these things are huge.

Will I begin to glow green in a few weeks?
 
I guess my answer would be 'No'?

It's not that dramatic, one of the kids I go to college with has 3 20 inch LCDs. And this EM radiation thing? Whatever. You get a higher radiation dosage from cosmic rays anyway.
 
Take it from me. The more realestate the better.
 
Dual 20"s would rock! I want to find $500ish and pickup a second 1600sw, 2300x1024 goodness ooohyeah!
 
It really all depends on what your doing with them. 99% of the people running dual monitors have no need for them besides the ego boost gives. Those same 99% of the people could easily do with one 20". I had dual 1800FPs for a while and ended up selling one, because it was absolutely pointless to have 2 of them. I don't do video editing or CAD design, so I had no need.

Don't know why you say this, there are way more things that dual monitors are good for other then CAD design and video editing. It's called multitasking, you should try it. I've been running dual monitors for nearly 7 years now and will never go back. Everyone i have ever introduced to dual monitors has absolutely LOVED it, not for an ego boost, but because it makes their lives easier, especailly in a work environment. I don't know about you, but it's a very rare occasion when i have only one thing going on at a time, whether i'm at work or at home, and it's ALWAYS nice to be able to just move your eyes a little then switch back and forth between applicaiton. Dual monitors is especailly helpfull in the work environment as well, everyone in my office uses them and i can 100% honestly say that they NEED them.

Moral of the story, don't bash it just because it doesn't fit your needs. If all you do is play solitare, browse the web tenatively, and game 24/7, then you probably don't need dual monitors. But for those of us who actually use our computers for other things that just those, dual monitors is a great utility to help make our lives easier. In my opinion, maybe 10% of people with dual montiors have them to fit thier ego needs, but to the other 90%, it's something people fell handicapped without.

If it fits your budget and your needs GO FOR IT! Dual 20" (assuming they're CRT), can take up quite a bit of desk space, but if you have it, use it! ;)

Pardon me, oh great one, but I certainly do multitasking....probably more than most people you know. I wouldn't be in my position if I only sat and played solitaire. But as they say, when you ASSume.....

The fact is, the majority of people don't have a use for dual monitors. As I said, I had two, and didn't really find it any more beneficial. I'll give you that SOME people in a work environment can benefit from them, but especially in the home, it's a mostly worthless feature.

Next time when you want to get high and mighty about multitasking, do it to some high school kid noob who only plays games.
 
I wasn't specifically speaking to you about the solitare comment, so try not to take things so personal, i wasn't judging you at all, but i was saying in general, to a person who just plays solitare, browses internet, etc, that they don't need it. In those cases, i've never come across a user like that who had dual display, simply because (like you say), they don't need it. Even for light multitakers, dual display pays for itself with the convience it offers.

You say your an extreme multitasker, yet you didn't find a use for dual monitors. I can't imagin why it wouldn't have made things easier if you do as much as you say.

Sorry for my one sarcastic remark (which you quoted), i was out of line, but your the one assuming things about me and the people i know. Everything else i origionally wrote on my post was not directed at anyone and was just a general statement, so take it as you wish, just don't give me any crap about "high and mighty about multiasking." I was simply just giving perfect examples of how dual monitors can fit needs in many situations, it's up to the user to decide whether they want it or not and if it will benefit them.

My boss's loved me for hooking them up with dual monitors, it saves them tons of time and hastle every day. I think the only person who would ever actually only own dual displays for an "ego trip" would be a highschool kid, but who cares about that anyway, some day they will graduate and realize that those things dont really matter. For the rest of civilization with 2+ monitors, i strongly believe they have them because they feel that they serve a purpose in their experience with the computer and makes their daily lives maybe just a little bit easier.
 
Dual monitors would be of great help to me since I usually have a bunch of text editors opened, some online manuals and some documentation open and it is a hassle to wade through the dozen or so different windows I have open when I'm doing some work or programming.

However, you guys do bring up a good point, some people don't need dual or more monitors.

While we're on this subject, here's a question: is there any noticeable degradation in image quality when you use a VGA->DVI converter to plug a VGA monitor into the DVI port? I'm asking because if I were to get a second monitor, I might just get another Mitsu DP930.
 
You wouldn't really notice a difference, for the most part. I only notice a difference with DVDs. I think they care sharper with a DVI connection. Games and regular 2D stuff pretty much look the same.

My only point as I try to clarify was that the vast majority of people don't need it, even if they have it. I've worked in enough IT departments to know people want new shiny things....even if they have no need. I am sure people out there do have a need. It's just not very common. I am in no means putting down dual monitors. I know a CAD designer who simply couldn't do with one monitor.
 
Bah, why do people have to have ultra-big monitors. Darn it, I used to run 1024 on a 15" and I was able to read it clearly. On my grandmother's 21" I can easily read an 8 pt font at a reasonable distance in 2048x1536. Darn you all!!!


*sigh* Ok, sorry. Just venting the fact I'm stuck with a crappy old 19" that maxes out at 1280x1024 @ 60Hz or 1280x960 @ 72Hz (I have no idea why, but I prefer true 4:3 anyway, so I stick with 960.) If I could just get 1600 I'd be such a happy person. I don't care if it was a 15" either.
 
Nazo, what monitor do you use?

I was stuck on a 13 inch viewable CRT for 6 years that only did 60 hz at 1024x768. It was so painful and I got headaches when I started using my computer to do everything.
So glad to have a 19 inch beauty now, but another $300 for dual solution sounds appealing for working.

Also, I'm with you; I hate 1280x1024 and need my 4:3.

Personally, I want a digital screen. Screw multimonitor setups. Those are sweet, but, I'll stick with virtual desktops just to have the beautiful clarity of one of those. Of course, I'll be lucky to ever get enough for a 1280x960 LCD, I'm not even going to look at prices for a 1600 capable one (it seems like 99% of them are 1280 max.) Heck, just to have digital, I'll take 1280. Can't go back to 1024 though. I'm spoiled.

My grandmother's is a Hyundai something or other. Man it ruled being able to play around with 2048 for a while while she was gone. God it sucks that she never goes higher than 800x600 with that thing. *sigh*
 
Heat is the major issue with the mutiple crts, 4 15" and a 19" easily heated the room up over 100F. Too bad I had to go back to one monitor because the psu couldn't handle 5 videocards though 4424x3168 resolution was very nice.
 
Man, I run 3 19" crt's in my basement and freeze down there in the winter time. I do not run these monitors 24-7 though. I imagine that would make a significant difference.
 
I've been running dual 2001FPs since December.

I <3 them.

I don't =need= dual monitros 100% of the time, but the 10% I have legitimate use for them, they're VERY nice to have.
 
You have not lived until you can have your email, forums and news groups, IM, etc on one screen while gaming on the other. How about digital photography on one with photo shop tools on the other.

3 d modeling the same, the possiblities are endless. Dualies rules !
 
I couldnt live without my triple monitors...

when I'm forced to use a single monitor I feel lost.. having to tab back and forth or resize windows is a major time waste.

I dont do CAD or Digital (anything) but just doing daily tasks is made that much easier having independent screens and taskbars (thanks to Ultramon)

If it came down to money I would rather spend the $500 on a second monitor than a faster processor.

I would rate dual/triple monitors for productivity increases right up there with adding more memory to your pc.
