Tom blows up 5950 Ultra.

I do still occassionally read Toms.

In his Dual display tests, he managed to blow up a 5950 at stock, even though the Radeon 9800XT showed 85 celsuis and the Geforce 81 celsius.

A "loud bang" indicates a capacitor blew up. If it were common, you would read it here and on other boards. I haven't read a post of a blown up capacitor in a very long time.

Capacitors do leak and die, like what happened with Gainward and others from the stolen (and incomplete) dielectric formula fiasco.
 
Well, maybe not too common because there are a rare few people who have the 5950.

Yeah, I'm thinking busted cap too. The smell and off-colour smoke is usually a dead giveaway.

You're thinking of the 5800 Ultra. That was rare. The 5950 Ultra is pretty common.
 
i have two radeons (7000 methinks) with capacitors busted open - so it's not just nvidia cards doind that. :)
