Hey guys, just looking for some advice. I'm really looking to upgrade my CPU/Mobo because my m2n32-sli deluxe wifi is really unstable and my 5000+ AM2 is too outdated for my liking.

My question is, should I get the E8400 + P5Q Pro combo at newegg for ~265 before tax, or should I wait the month or so and go big and get an i7 or whatever is coming out in October? The combo is on sale until 9/30 and I'm looking to buy it this week once I can settle my decision on something. I'm just really anxious to upgrade, but don't want to make a mistake. I would save $40 off regular pricebuying that combo now, and it just seems like it's too good to pass up.. but you guys are the experts and know everything about the i7 so I should leave it up to you.

All I really do is F@H, play CS:S, TF2, CoD4, WoW, you know.. all the typical games. I don't do any photo editing or anything. Maybe that'll influence the decision.

Edit: I wanted to mention I'm not a big overclocker, and don't plan on getting an aftermarket cooler until I really feel comfortable doing it which should be in a few months if I get tempted.
 
There is a $20 rebate on the E8400 + P5Q Pro making it $245! Add in 3% live.com cashback , which usually gets applied to the pre-combo-discount price, that's another $9 you'll get back. Really good deal.

I don't believe you're going to be able to touch an i7 CPU and Motherboard (not to mention the cost of DDR3 RAM) for anywhere near $235 on this deal, certainly not in a month. I think the 2.66ghz i7 is supposed to be $285, and just like when the E8400 was released, short supply will probably make the street price higher.

I'm not an expert, so you decide (plus it's your money!!). But for the games you play and any new games coming along, I don't think you'll notice a difference between i7 and E8400.
 
i7 won't increase gaming performance much (or at all ehe).

P5Q Pro + E8400 E0 is what I recommend. Best bang for the buck IMO

Yeah I forgot to mention that price won't be a problem at all in a month, but I was really keeping an eye on that E8400 deal and was anxious to buy it. Thanks guys!
 
I'd probably want to wait more than a month after i7 is out to let things settle down and become stable before picking it up.
 
As a side note, I never buy nor encourage people to buy 1st 'gen' stuff. You're paying big price for 'beta testing'. No thank you
 
If you are REALLY into Folding, then you absolutely must buy a Quad core chip. ;) Better yet, buy a dual socket server board and go 8 core damnit! :D

I never buy cutting edge stuff, particularly mobos.

Same here. It always pisses me off when I buy a new mobo and a better version of it or new model comes out a month or two after.
 
I would buy a Core 2 Quad chip and Mobo after the i7's are released. Should be able to get great performance for a long while and it will be super cheap.

Agreed. Considering the current struggle to make use of 4 cores I don't see the need to pay a premium for even more parallel processing. For stuff I do anyhow.

I bought an E6600 and P5B Deluxe motherboard shortly after release, and they still run fine today, never had any problem, and performance is still close to cutting-edge for dualcore (I can easily clock my CPU to 3 GHz, only slightly slower than the current 3.2 GHz dualcore top model).
So I got excellent value for money. If I were to buy a Core2 Duo (or even Quad) now, it'd probably be demoted by the introduction of the Core i7 which will redefine price and performance, as Core2 did before it (my brother bought a Pentium D only a few months before Core2 Duo, and he got bitten badly. My system was far cheaper and LOTS faster).

Argh, my pc died a couple days ago and I don't know how long I can wait. Right now I can get a E8400 and P5Q Pro for $245, I'm so tempted to order but I know the longer I wait, the better. Also, the longer I wait, the bigger my budget. Please convince me to wait. :)Also, how much better is Core i7 supposed to be?

I think the main problem with Core i7's cost will be the DDR3 memory.
With Core2 you can still choose plenty of DDR2 boards, and stuff the machine with 8 GB of cheapo DDR2 memory.

Core2 i7 will be in the shops in November, I think... so perhaps you shouldn't wait for that.
And that's only 'high-end' models (cheapest CPU will be $266 I believe, motherboards probably also expensive).
So you might just want to get the E8400 now (or an even cheaper Core2 and overclock it), and then use that for a year or so, then buy a Core i7 system when the prices of DDR3 and motherboards have gone down.

In my case I had an ancient Athlon XP1800+ system with SDR memory. Luckily it wasn't broken, so I just waited out the introduction of Core2... I already knew that I had to get new memory and all that anyway, virtually nothing from my old system could be re-used. But luckily DDR2 was already very affordable at that time.

not that expensive. price of a i7 is gunna be just above £200 for the cpu. you can get 4gb ddr3 ram for just over £150 now and mobo's will probably be priced around £150 as well so all in all it shouldnt cost you no more then £800 for a nehalem build.

i7's are around 50-60% faster then the FASTES quad core cpu u can find now and thats compared to the lower end i7 too. the 2.6ghz one.

in games it doesnt make a difference because games are not optmised yet for that kind of power. i mean with all these console ports coming out on the pc, it will be a LONNNNNNNG time before your i7 will become a problem with games.

i'd say a i7 will DEFINETLY last you 4 years playing the latest and greatest games at high settings given that you only upgrade your graphics card once in a while, you will be set for a loong ass time.

my bro has a e6600 a month after it was released and whats he using now? the same thing and its going strong till this day. all he needs is to slot in a 4870x2 card if need be and he is able to play everything at 1080p res except crysis. thats the joys of buying from a new socket/cpu family, it lasts longer! dont expect your i7 chip to be beaten by 50-60% for at least 2-3 years by intel themselfes as if you look at the timeline of intels cpu, after nehalem,they will come out with die shrinks/refreshes which will most likely be just 20% faster then your i7 at best just like the penthyn's.

tick-tock is a better way of describing it. only think is AMD could come out with somthing 50-60% faster then your i7 but when will that be and what are the chances of that happening? they still dont have a cpu that rivals todays quad core

only buy now if u tend to upgrade again in a years time or else just wait 2 months max and you be laughing mate.
 
Thanks guys, I guess I'll wait. I'll have to fight my temptations. My budget will grow by November, so I won't mind the prices as much as I do now. I want to be able to run Alan Wake as high as possible, so that will motivate me.

its been known that alan wake will fully utilize a quad core also. plus i7's is the first true native quad core cpu

I wouldn't be surprised if a Q6600 or similar is enough for that game. It's been under development for a long time, and they probably never meant to target the Core i7, because it was too far away, and they had no idea what to expect.

As for native? Oh please. I thought Phenom was already enough proof that the whole 'native quadcore' thing is nonsense.
